Stevenage preview!

We quickly recap any final thoughts from Carlisle before going in to a Stevenage preview. They started well with 2 wins before a thrashing at Bradford on Tuesday. Can we finally grab our first goal of the season and a win? Two of us seem to think so!

And in a double drop in 24 hours for us, we're releasing our interview with Tom Pope that we did this past Monday. It's comes in just over 3 hours long by the time it was all done! We cover his career and time at Vale including:

- Early days trying to make it as a professional footballer

- Time at Rotherham as their joint record signing

- The Jim Gannon era

- Signing permanently for Micky Adams

- Promotion season and 33 goals, including our favourite goals

- Lee Collins

- Signing for Bury and his two years there

- Return to Vale and his work with Michael Brown and Neil Aspin

- John Askey, the captaincy and that relationship

- The Man City game

- The Flitcroft/Clarke appointments and his release from Vale

There's a lot to take in over the whole of the episode. He obviously goes in to a bit more detail about his release from Vale and how that was handled. We're aware that it isn't positive, however we felt that it was an interesting interview that people should get to hear. As we say on the pod, these are Tom's words and there are two sides to every story. Enjoy!

Thanks for that, just stopped myself from hitting play on Spotify to save it for later as it and the 30 minute match preview will give me something to do on the long trek down a garden shed in Hertfordshire tomorrow.

Brutal stuff regarding Flitcroft and Clarke.

I disagree with his assessment of the current squad, and think he misses the point about generally needing to bring down the average age of the squad and sign players with some potential resale value. However, I agree with him on Carol's mistake with getting too close to Askey and that she may have been hoodwinked by Flitcroft's spiel when belatedly looking for a replacement.

I hope Tom finds a path post-football that fulfills him. At the moment he seems angry and disillusioned by the game he's dedicated his life to, and his relationship with the club sounds completely broken which is so sad. Whilst I think it was the right time for club and player to part ways, the way it was handled sounds so poor considering he is our post-war top goalscorer and a hero to thousands of Vale fans. I hope he doesn't continue to be shunned by the club and that we (Vale fans) can support his testimonial to the full, and the club likewise.

Just finished listening... its clearly something that is very painful for Tom.

He sounds like someone who knows the game has moved on past the style of player he was and is struggling to accept it.

Sounds like dealing with Askey did a real number on him mentally. Whether that has impacted him to the point of being in such a bad place he cant come to peace with the way things ended I don't know.

Case in point... "Flickers was brilliant and I recommended to everyone that they get him on board... hen he didn't ask me my opinions on players so now I hate him." Doesn't feel like a proportionate response to me.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on people though and Tom is more than entitled to his given its his truth... Pinch of salt on his ability to judge someone maybe given 2 people he had positive things to say about were Norman and Artell 🙂

I agree with your comments.

Didn't agree on his mocking of Stones calling him mentally weak. Basically Stones was getting pelters and banter at City for weeks no wonder he didn't want to speak with him. Tantamount to bullying.

We also have to remember two sides to every story, i'm sure Askey has a different tale to tell.

Again the Montano thing is clutching at straws. We all knew he'd had issues with Clarke at Bristol. Not every player gets on with every manager. Was clear his days were numbered, maybe the fact it apeared he'd been released was wrong by Clarke but its all semantics.

Was an interesting listen and for me the way his career at Vale ended in such bitterness and slanging matches means that i won't be going to any testimonial game for him as i'm supporting the club who are bigger than any one player.
