  1. Hartlepool Review! We've cast aside the 'lost' Hartlepool Preview recording, and we've gone straight to the review! A solid 2-0 victory versus Hartlepool at home, so I must be a lucky omen at Vale Park! Bezza's passed out in Benidorm somewhere, so friend of the show JJ joins us to give his thoughts on a return to winning ways, during a cold and blustery afternoon in Burslem. Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  2. That's fair, Rochdale were decent too. As I said on the pod, I'm not worried by anyone at this level. We gave Forest Green a good going over, and if they're the best team in the league then we've got every right to be up there too. With Gibbo, totally agree on the RWB. Would be interested to see if there was any difference if Worrall/Gibbo switched for a game! He's an unbelievable player
  3. It is tough with the contract situation. But if you want to keep him, there must be an offer we make now that would tie him down. I'm guessing he would become either the top, or one of the top earners.
  4. I'll pass it on to Jonny! I thought he was good myself.
  5. I thought we were terrible that night. I also thought Mansfield were decent, and probably the best side we've played against this season.
  6. It was a great shout. They looked good against us that Tuesday night and have good players across the team. There's a couple of the more pre-season fancied teams now on a bit of a march!
  7. Oldham Review/Walsall Preview Dreadful defending the theme as we lose to 2nd bottom Oldham with a performance that was not consistent with the rest of the season. Jonny and Stu go through the game, work out which players can come out with any credit and how we go forward from here. We also quickly preview the Walsall game on Tuesday with the Saddlers fans fired up for once to come to Vale Park! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  8. Oldham (A) Preview We're joined by friend of the show Nath to discuss the weeks news, including James Wilson's injury, Dennis Politic and the situation at Bolton and also ticket sales for upcoming games. Then into the Oldham preview. With a big following due for Vale and protests for the home team, can Vale take advantage? And what formation and lineup would we play? Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  9. I think we've discussed before with Gibbo. There has been times when a mislaid pass has led to either a serious chance being given away or he's had to work back heavily to stop it. I certainly think he's improved on that in the last 12 months, I'd argue he's probably been one or if not our best player to date this season. I think playing on the left where it's less natural for him has made him a better player which is really saying something. I know Vale will be trying to get a new contract done, I just hope it's soon! I agree with you about trying to get in behind them. That's what Bradford did to us 1st half on Saturday with Vernam. I didn't see as much as that with Amoo although he did it with the goal. Maybe that's a tactical decision from Clarke and he doesn't want to play like that? Up front will be a serious talking point this week. I really hope Wilson isn't too badly injured. If nothing else, he's got some momentum now and we look a lesser side when he's not on the pitch.
  10. Bradford Review! A draw probably a fair result after an entertaining (Well Stu thought so!) game in front of the cameras at Vale Park. Should there have been 2 reds? Is there injury concerns with Wilson, and which star shone brightest on TV? All those questions answered and more! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  11. Arrgh! I didn't think anyone would respond so quickly after the final whistle. We've already recorded otherwise I would have included this in there!
  12. Bradford Preview! Plenty of cup news to discuss, with the FA Cup, Youth Cup and (Unfortunately) the pizza trophy all ongoing! Also lots of good news out there for Vale this week with articles on the club and Darrell Clarke in the national press prior to the weekends televised game. A Bradford preview then, as we take on one of the pre-seasons promotion favourites. Vale in strong form, but Bradford have only 1 in 6 and have a big following heading to Vale Park. What a weekend to look forward to! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  13. Accrington Preview! A quick catch up in the week. Bezza rejoins us as he's feeling better so thanks for all the good wishes that were sent! We discuss the club's youth victory and how the Elite Player Performance Plan is hampering us and other clubs from making true progress in youth development. A quick word on a Vale legend's new job and then in to the Accrington preview. Accy are 12th in League One, and will be very dangerous opposition. How will they approach it, and how will we? A great weekend ahead. Bezza finishes up by saying this Vale side would be doing ok in League One. What does everyone think? Let us know! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  14. That's pretty fair, especially over 90 mins. Had some good halves(Barrow, Harrogate, Swindon) so far as well. Just goes to show that most of the time, when you get promoted you're battering teams week in week out, it's the small margins that get you through. I do however feel there's more to come from Vale. I'd say at some point, one of the strikers will hit a hot streak. I'm hoping for Wilson, as I bet the other two a pint he'd get 20 goals!
  15. I reckon it can be both. I think Mansfield surprised us a bit. With their poor form they were supposedly ripe for the picking. I didn’t think so. They have decent players across the pitch. It was an off night for Vale, but certainly some of that was down to how well they played.
  16. Yep we take that on board. It was a discussion we wanted to have. It didn’t think it came off as a massive criticism (that wasn’t the intention, and we did say he’s got some left foot) but it was something Jonny noted and wanted to discuss. Great point about the fact there are plenty of world class left footers that can’t use their right. One that was pointed out to us was Rivaldo who was decent enough 😂
  17. I think it’s not necessarily our formations (although we have been steady with a 5-3-2 in the main from the start) but more about our style and how we build attacks. I thought we did give Mansfield good credit for their performance. I said that it was the best performance of the season against us.
  18. Crawley review! Vale get the win and a big win at that. Not the finest performance, but 80 minutes against 10 men and Vale's quality showed through in the end. We go through the game, Jonny's match ratings and wonder why John Yems is commenting on things he hasn't seen! Let us know what you think! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  19. Yep me neither. You win the comp!(no prize 😂)
  20. We’ve got no idea unfortunately. 500+ games in the Football League is astounding. He would make a mess of a kids 7-a-side game.
  21. Crawley Away! We look at a couple of things in more detail that we've discussed in recent weeks. Tom Conlon and switching from 3 to 4 at the back the main topics. We go through the Supporters Club meeting and then discuss the Crawley game. Plenty of discussion on the ref unfortunately. Crawley have only won 1 of their last 5, but had a rough run of games against decent teams. Can we add to their misery, and will Clarkey switch it up again? Let us know! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  22. Yep I thought he was great. Good to see so many things we discuss coming in to games!
  23. Colchester Review! A review of an excellent performance at home to Colchester. Goals from Gibbons, Wilson and Martin keep the good form going! Talking points about pace, Smith and Gibbo as well as 3 different picks for Man of the Match. A happy place to be after a great game! Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  24. Colchester Preview! We're joined by friend of the show Andy (aka Santa on OVF) to look back at the week just gone. We discuss if we've been found out a little bit and need to change things up and whether Rodney deserves to go straight back in with Proctor likely out for a while. We then look at the Colchester game. It looks like a great game to get back on track for Vale, with Colchester languishing in 19th position. What do you think? Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com
  25. Yep for me, it was Conlon who looks to get bottled up the most. Then to a lesser extent Worrall and Pett. I wouldn't include Garrity in that conversation. For me, you can get round the opposition zeroing in on specific players by the others stepping up and using the space they've been afforded. It's happened in some games, and then not in others. You make a good point about the wingbacks. I've said before that if you don't get those two attacking early they easily get pushed back in to more of a full back role and we lose some attacking edge. It's incredibly important that the wingbacks set their stall out early in the games. Does anyone else have anything to add on the thought that teams are now more wise to how we want to play, and how they stop us from playing? I'll pick the best stuff up for tomorrow's pod.
