A fair read and maybe explains the tightening of the belt somewhat.

To an extent but the following quote worries me somewhat.

“ This is no disrespect but we are never going to be able to compete with the League One top ten financially in my opinion in this league”.

That is a bit concerning given our crowds are actually very good and I see no reason why clubs like, well any outside of Ipswich, Charlton, Portsmouth, Bolton, Derby cannot be competed with at some point if we keep up the crowds and commercial efforts.

Our crowds are the 13th highest in the league, so considering we aren't in the top 10 we aren't going to compete with the top 10

As always, we have to over-achieve, either by smart management or developing players. Building the fan base takes time and we have competition close by. Cup runs speed things up, but are not very frequent. Progress takes time and effort.

But we're not going to be able to compete financially he's right really.

Its just a general "Top 10"

Bolton, Sheff Weds, Derby, Ipswich Barnsley, Peterborough, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Oxford for example all huge wage budgets be it from club size/turnover which is far greater than ours or a sugar daddy pumping it in.

I wouldnt be concerned by that, it is just a well known fact, but we are likely financially competitive with the other 12/13 teams, in fact I am sure sides like Cheltenham, Burton, Accrington and Morecambe look at our budget and feel they are not financially able to compete with us. We sit midway.

I know, but it's like Chinese Whispers.  Next thing you know there'll be a thread on the Club going bump. 😂

You're aiming your comments at the wrong person--and I think you know it, as I'm on the same side of the argument as you. My intention was to draw out the rumour-monger and to find out why this has it started in the first place.

I think that’s a disappointing quote to be honest. ‘We will never be able to compete financially with the top 10’,there’s some big sides granted but if we have a serious ambition of the championship as the club keep telling us I think more money may need to be put up so we can at least compete for decent players and just as important keep our decent players.

Can understand the dilemmas that we face to move forward. Better players, better infrastructure, better pitch etc.

This has been evaluated against value for money acquisitions for January, when maybe getting seasoned championship targets might be tight.

I have trawled every day on this site, hoping for a stand out signing, but with little knowledge of our financial position v a five year plan, I will leave the decision to those in charge.

But, I remain positive but a tad disappointed. Vale are my team, the highs and lows since 1967 still excite me for the future.

If we get consolidation this year, I will be well chuffed.

Never be able to compete with the top ten little old port vale is back. Pretty disappointed with that from Clarke to be honest. Hope that wasn't in the presentation to the perspective new signings.

There's a different between competing financially, ie paying silly wages, and actually competing on the pitch.  We can't do the former, we can do the latter.  This isn't  "little old port vale", it's financially realistic Port Vale.

I think some people have got a bit carried away with our recent success. Although crowds have gone up , teams like Wednesday still get 3 x our crowds. So financially we are nowhere near them.

Additionally, Carol and Kevin are very wealthy but they can't just throw money into a bottomless pit. They have to run it as a viable business first and foremost.

What we have to rely on is our management team outsmarting and outperforming those above us with more money. It has been done before with teams like Wycombe and Burton, so it can be done. But it might take time, maybe 3 or 4 years, maybe longer. Businesses take time to grow and when they took over they were basically starting from scratch. I believe that Carol said early on in her tenure that the Championship was the target and then once we got there she would bring in money from other people to help compete at that level.

We're nowhere near Championship ready yet in terms of both squad and infrastructure. If we got promoted this season, we'd probably barely get a point in the league above. Better in my opinion to get the whole club fully prepared and ready for the next level.

Have you got a few million to improve if not be grateful we have a football club support .
Keep buying season tickets etc and helping the club in any way you can .
When only 6 thousand odd turn up v Derby you see the size of the job ahead its massive

The pitch the ground you name it costs a lot of money maintain and sustain
It can all go pear shaped if overspend and do not have a well run club .
DC will get a tune out of his squad we get stronger every season as season goes on.
Port Vale has potential but without investment cannot and will not be able to make that leap up into the championship and if they did at present they come back down and that be even more damaging .
Slow growth and enticing more support is the key .
How they do that well they have to win football games in a nutshell .
The live performance v Peterboro was major was very damaging in that very few folk turned up and we gave a shocking overall second half performance and thats broadcast to the whole nation.
Could be a investor out there willing to put the coin in help C/K out we must be seeking them for sure .

You credit me with more brains than I actually have.  I understand where you're going, though, and I'm with you all the way.
