If we're willing to pay a transfer fee (especially a six figure one) for a player it should be a someone in his early to mid 20s who has the potential to be developed and then get sold on.

At 28, Dennis isn't old, he should be at his peak, but as an investment I'm not it makes a lot of sense. When his contract expires he will be past 30 and depreciating so some or all of his fee could end up as dead money.

As a striker he will be towards the top of the wage structure anyway so the money would be put to better use in the main wage budget pot and we look at out of contract players instead.

I do agree with the logic on that. We don't tend to pay fees very often so for a club in our position, wise investing is a must.

But, on the other hand, if he hit it off with Pope and their goals got us up in two years time, would've been worth it wouldn't it?

Agreed! On that logic, we wouldn't pay a fee for players like Christiano Ronaldo, Messi, etc! 21 goals for a team that were relegated and generally crap was superb. At 28 he should be at his peak. Combine him with Pope, and it could be the most potent strike force in League 2 next season (subject to service, of course).

Perhaps the club has come to the conclusion that an additional ready made striker is essential to achieve a top 12 finish or even make a push for higher, until the season starts it is not clear what the spending levels are going to be. That will involve a transfer fee, whereas just using a development policy would not produce a safety net against a repeat of last season.

Exactly this - the hierarchy at the club would have to weigh this up and agree that this scenario would be worth paying a £100k transfer fee for.

There aren't many clubs in the bottom two leagues who have the wherewithal to do that and as a club that doesn't routinely pay transfer fees, I'm not sure that's going to be us. The other option if we've got a spare 100 grand is to put it in the wage budget and see what free transfers are out there.

Not a criticism, just an observation. But maybe that's just me being impossible to please.
