This may be a stupid question, but is there anything to stop the players who have 'agreed to sign' when their current contract expires from going elsewhere if a better offer comes along? Really hope not.

Is that what Duffy did on Eastleigh ?

This could be wrong of course but i am sure i saw that Bradford were going to pay him near 4k a week and thats why he was fuming when it all broke down in Jan

I'd guess if that's the case it was probably Chesterfield not agreeing the fee as if they'd sold their top scorer without replacing him(despite having 100K+ in the bank) they'd have been pretty much resigning themselves to the drop. Obviously they went down despite keeping him anyway but can you imagine if we'd sold Pope in January had he been in Dennis' position there'd have been uproar and we'd have been royally ****** so to speak!

What I'm saying it was probably worth Chesterfield taking the gamble by keeping him another 6 months to give them a chance of staying up with his goals. He's still under contract so they'll get a fee now anyway although they could take slightly less as they've got more time to replace him now!?

Im happy with these signings.

My friend is a huge Cambridge fan and he said that Legge was incredible when they signed him, big, commanding and has scored 1 goal per 10 games throughout his career. He had a shoulder injury earlier this year that knocked him out of the side and whilst out they signed a younger centre half who played amazingly. Legge was signed using the money they made from their cup game against United and was a high earner. Therefore he reckons that even though the shoulder is fine now, Cambridge has managed their squad and gone for the younger and probably cheaper option.

He doesnt know much about the vale, so I smiled when his final words to me were "If you have a young defence that needs a bit of guidance then he would be a cracking signing"

As for Rawlinson, how people can moan and say he sounds like a Bruno player baffles me... Aspin is balancing the budget he has been handed. We cannot sign 10 experienced players on top dollar for this league. The lad will be back up, is big, has experience and is also described as fast.

So far so good from Aspo... Whatever the budget may be, he is balancing it well!!

I have noticed over the last couple of weeks a lot of league 2 and 1 teams have been signing players from non league but some only ever think its us who do it,i trust aspin when it comes to non league signings i really do

Meanwhile back in the real world. Aspin has said Joyce turned down higher wages from Clubs in Non League.

So to all the people saying Smurf doesn't pay peanuts, can you answer why clubs in non league can afford to pay more than Vale.

I'd guess the likes of Salford and possibly Fylde are paying silly money for players(by 5th tier standards anyway). I'm not a smurf fan but I wouldn't use that as a stick to beat him with necessarily.

Cambridge have just signed defender Louis John from Sutton after signing Jevani Brown (attacking midfielder) from St Ives last season. Blackpool also just signed Michael Nottingham from Salford City (how did they afford that!) and, in one of the best close season signings yet, Walsall have signed Andy Cook, Tranmere’s leading scorer. So, it’s not just us!

Id add Eastleigh and a couple more to that list. I wouldn't think there will be a huge gap in pay between league one and the National League anymore. Joyce will have probably been one of the top earners at any National league side given his age and experience.

When other clubs do it, it's a good find. When we do it, it's evidence of Smurf's penny pinching on wages and fees, and lack of ambition.

Out of pure interest: what is 'silly money' in the National League?

750-1K a week+ I'm guessing? I genuinely don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if Salford are paying or at least planning on paying players £750 a week at least (possibly more) this coming season. If they've signed Chris Neal who's a pretty experienced league player and poached the lad Whitehead from Macc Town(who would have been playing league football otherwise) they've got to be offering a decent 'going rate' at least comparable(if not better) than some League One and Two clubs!

Not that you necessarily have to pay it, Macc won it last season paying players a lot less I'd imagine!

True, I guess the only thing in favour for clubs like Vale is that at least we're in the football league and in theory playing at a slightly higher standard. So if a player does well at Vale they are more likely to get noticed by say a Championship club even if they aren't necessarily earning more money.

OK perhaps not so much in Joyce's case as at 30 I'd doubt he's going to play Championship in his career unless he suddenly has an outstanding season with us but the prestige of playing and hopefully doing well for league club still has a little more pull than doing well in the National League.
