Match Thread: Port Vale v Colchester Utd

I think a big factor in the dip in form has been the loss of Gunning and Denton.

A very small squad of players couldn't cope with that level of disruption and there has been a knock on effect.

The need now is to reestablish a settled team as quickly as possible.

Also Whitfield not been performing.

I think these next 2 home games could be a pivotal moment in our season. Win them both and we can look for a top half finish. Lose them both or only pick up a point or two and we might find ourselves looking over our shoulder for the rest of the season.

Let's hope its the former so we can sit back and enjoy the rest of the season whilst Aspin works out who to keep and who to bin off in the summer.

Got a feeling Lainton will start the match tomorrow.

With any luck he'll finish it as well.

Same here, been saying it all week that Boot could be a casualty from last weeks performance as well as Pugh too.

Not sure Laintons a long term number one though as hes seemingly too injury prone.

Seems as if Aspin is contemplating changes after the last three uninspiring displays.

I wonder if he'll play Lainton, bring Jules into the defence and maybe even give Wilson a run out alongside Pope.

He's got a few possibilities but I'm expecting a few changes to shake things up a bit.

We have several times, Rotherham away boxing day the promotion season springs to mind, but have also had some stinkers! As a ref he always worries me, one of those who is liable to give decisions where he's the only person in the ground who knows why he's given it!

My mate told me we had him when we beat Burnley at home in the league cup but the last 4 vale games he has been ref we have lost.

Don't think our squad is that small but I agree we've really missed Gunning and Denton. Gunning may not be much more than L1/L2 quality but he was an experienced pro and one of the senior players in the squad. I think the manner of his departure really unsettled the team and it was made worse by having to face him in the next game. Denton's value was seen last time we played Colchester when in a few minutes of coming on he set up the equaliser with a great cross. We no longer have those options.

Still it's water under the bridge now and we have to get on with it. Hopefully the new lads will help forge a new team spirit and we can go on another good run. Tomorrow would be a good time to start.
