Match Thread: Port Vale v Colchester Utd

On the bright side

The other good one was when Yeovil were at Vale Park home game before last, they were in their huddle just prior to the game. Anthony Kay went up to the huddle, stuck his foot in the middle and retrieved the ball and put it on the center circle.

Luton don't need signings. We do.

4 players who cost him naff all.

The fee is irrelevant ozil is free this summer, does it mean he’s not worth having? You can pay fees for players and them not work out, you can sign a player for free and they are a diamond. Strengthening the team is what it’s about.

January isn’t a good time to buy players or sign players, the fact we have done something and added to the squad is positive. Aspin is taking about the summer for signings and overhauling the squad so let’s go with what he says. There’s still time to go in the window we may well pick up another signing from non league and if like Hannant he strengthens the team then great

I've been searching for something positive to say about yesterday and all I can say is that it's reassuring to see how bad this league is. If you look at the league table, Colchester are a decent enough side who if they put their poor run behind them can challenge for the playoffs. And they are absolutely woeful.

We're far from the finished article, but a small improvement in personnel and performances over the next twelve months should result in us challenging for a top seven position at the end of next season.

We were very sloppy in defence in this game against an eminently beatable Colchester. Two poor goals conceded. That second goal was so deep into first half stoppage time that I think the Vale defence were already in the dressing room. At least we salvaged a point but we must tighten up at the back.

Individual mistakes are costing them. First one we see a sliced clearance from Kay before it richochets out wide where they have 3 players over and the shot deflects off Gibbons and wrong foots Lainton. Second one Jules and Smith didn't push up, and Jules didn't have enough urgency in chasing the ball down and I think maybe Lainton will be disappointed he didn't save that one as it went straight through him.

Far too much space was allowed in our left back area for that second goal. I was in the railway paddock so couldn't appreciate how much space that guy was afforded had until I saw it on the highlights. No urgency in defence for that goal, we were waiting for the half time whistle I think. Very disappointed with both of those goals. Lainton could have done better too.

The likelihood of conceding a goal increases when you get a number of individual errors compounding themselves in the same move. I think Aspin said on the radio that there were four or five in the build up to their second goal.

Montaño could have done better to cut out the ball down the line, Jules doesn't do a good job of reading it either, Smith appeals for offside for some reason, drifts away from the middle, the bloke gets his shot away unchallenged and it squirms under Lainton.
