He's had a great career. 700 test wickets and a 20 year career playing for England can't complain with that. He gets his send off and hopefully takes 3 or 4 more wickets in his last match. It will give England the chance to put out a younger bowling attack. I know they will pick woakes and wood for now, but there's plenty of others waiting to step in. Tongue, fisher, cook,Potts are 4 bowlers that for me are likely to get picked, plus there is Robinson and archer if they can stay fit.

Not sure on the likes of Fisher, cook and Potts in the immediate future given the Ashes coming up. They will likely pick the tallest quicks available along with Wood, Archer and Robinson.

I think just on Robinson he is at a bit of a crossroads in his career. Looked very unfit in India and was barely getting it above 75mph so he needs to go away and think on things. The one who really I really liked last summer in the couple of tests he played was Tongue, maintained a good pace throughout.

Anderson on retirement, the future & his send-off

Jimmy's own further comments about the decision confirm that it was mutual, because the next Ashes series was a bridge too far.

And further confirm that Jimmy is likely to remain in the England set-up as a bowling coach, which is great news.

If any player trained and practised well enough to make the very most of their talent and their physical capabilities, it is James Anderson.

Passing on those traits to the next generations of bowlers has got to be a big boost for the England team.

I'm hoping Saqid Mahmood puts his injury issues behind him (he's back in the Lancashire team). I think he's one that is genuine International class but he has to stay fit or he'll never prove it. I think Robinson has burnt his bridges and I doubt he'll get in the squad again.

Personally, I think there's room for a less express bowler (so I'd give Cook a go) and alongside him, I'd pick Mahmood and Wood as my quicker pair.

Completely agree on both. I just think they will take Robinson with his height but he’s looked a long way off it recently. They have made some really good left field selections, Tongue and Bashir based on not much cricket. Tongue looks promising to me and should go to the Ashes

What was it Robinson did? I know they weren’t overly impressed with him in India but not sure if I’ve missed something.
Mahmood has quality, quite a skiddy bowler with good pace, I think he’s dangerous up front, just another one who seems injured half the time. Hopefully he can stay fit and have good year

I think they were frustrated with his lack of conditioning particularly. The test he played in India Stokes pretty much ignored him the whole time in the 2nd innings which tells a story itself. Rob Key made some pointed remarks about needing him to bowl quicker too. Also there were stories around the end of the India tour some of the England hierarchy were a bit peeved with him over a podcast he does with his girlfriend where he’d just talk about stuff they wanted to keep in house.

Something would love to see England find would be a left arm fast bowler. We’ve often had medium pace ones like Curran but seen the effect Starc or previously Johnson has had in the Aussie team. Stokes having that to call on for something different could be fun.

Thanks for the memories Jimmy... seems like 10 minutes ago when you were rapid but wayward youngster up at lancs.

Nothing lasts for ever and its the right time to move on. I bet you cant go out in the same way as Broady with a wicket with your last ball in test cricket !!

There ll be youngsters chomping at the bit for a go a fragile West Indies this summer, lets see who sticks their hand up.

( I just realised I ve  written this as though he ll be reading it !! Weird)
