Rumour is RobF is off to Saudi?

Is that the place where old has-beens go long after their glory days have gone?

Apart from the dodgy human rights, it seems the perfect place for me...

I get Wrexham wage bill to be that and they are spending what they are earning so not living beyond their means, they sell out every week, had a turnover of 6 million last year and expected with the documentary to be 20 million next year.  What I do have a problem with is Salford and their 2000 gates, don't understand how their wage bill can be so high.

Wrexham is a nice city to work in as I found in 2014 for a couple of months. At that time my Wrexham office colleagues were mourning the desperate state the club and its dilapidated stadium found itself in. So I don't begrudge them some turbo charged finance to get them back up the league structure and the reconstruction of their ground.

I don't begrudge Salford either. One of the main reasons I'll tolerate them is to do with the demise of other historic Greater Manchester clubs - Oldham, Rochdale and most of all Bury. I'm always sad when I think of what's happened to Bury and of course it's a signal that the arrival of great wealth in a club can turn out badly when they grow tired of their toy and stop managing it properly.

Unfortunately Oldham has widely disliked owners as well and whose failings have taken them from L1 to where they are now. Rochdale having generally been a L2 level club in my lifetime and one I like. I worked in Rochdale for a few months in 2007 and I it's a bit of an eclectic place.

So, lets rank these as places to work as I have worked in all of them for periods of time.

1. Wrexham.

2. Bury.

3. Oldham.

4. Rochdale.

5. Salford.

Watched the the most recent episode of the "Welcome to Wrexham" series the other night and it was about their FA Cup run last season.  It showed how proud the Wrexham fans are of their exploits in the FA Cup and the general buzz, the great feeling and interest around the town and even the world created by the resurgence of the club under the Hollywood owners.

I don't know where this journey will take Wrexham but good luck to them apart from when they play the  Vale.

Wrexham fans can be positive because they have the backing of Deadpool and his mate’s millions. They are rebuilding the ground, with a mega new stand and will easily saunter to the championship in 5 years.

Vale?

A great past two years when fans were really positive until Christmas last year. We had what looked like a good league 1 squad and an owner who was doing the right things.

Doubt has certainly crept in.

You may be right. But at our level, financial fair play rules prevent just paying for a bigger and better team than the inherent club couldn't otherwise afford. Yes they can do improvements to the stadium and increase its economic potential.

What they can't do is bung the team millions. Wrexham is inherently a club with support max at about 10k on a good day. If the owners want it to be more than a L1/2 club they have to sustaibly change the historic nature of Wrexham by increasing support et al.

I think there are significant limitations to doing that. I like Wrexham as a place, but it's not Manchester etc. It doesn't have much international appeal as a partly Welsh language place. Plus it's a very small city of 45k in the built up area.

It's a nice project for the owners to have, but they ain't going very far with it.

Cant see how being bi-lingual will affect the attendances.

No, but they'll have a very nice ground! 😁

Very similar to Vale in terms of international appeal. The one difference I feel is that Wrexham have much lower expectations. They seem happy just to be back in the football league after such a long time away.

For many Vale fans and certainly me as a child of the 90s who started going in 1992 as a 7 year old, part of me still sees us as a 2nd Tier club and anything else is disappointing. Despite all the years of trauma etc, I still hope we will bounce back and have another 90s period.

Wrexham meanwhile see the EFL trophy as a big trophy. Some Vale fans find people even watching the games offensive because of the U21 teams. Wrexham didn’t seem to. They saw us as a big game and like the novelty to u21 big clubs coming to them after years of sides like Dover, Kings Lynn and Solihull Moors.

They have had over a decade in the wilderness, while Vale, thank god to Carol and some good luck, Tom Pope, work from Aspin and Askey, never experienced non league football.

I actually think the owners, through the welcome to Wrexham show played the Welsh heritage card very well. They make it seem interesting and unique to audiences, which has made it fascinating to some audiences.

I have, like many people in Stoke, some links to Wales and my cousins who live in Vermont, have shown a distinct interest in exploring their own Welsh roots due to the show.

Wrexham could become the Welsh “national” league team, as they are the only Welsh side I have seen which have really played on Welsh nationalism well.

Cardiff City feel like they are pushed to the side in a rugby area and trips to Swansea never felt like I was in Wales, just another uni town.

Certainly football in the North of Wales is bigger and holds great potential.
