Wrexham

Sorry to have to say this, but Wrexham are bigger than the Vale.  Are and always likely to be the only league club in North Wales, which appeals to the nationalists. I went to a fourth division match attended by 19,000 people. The return fixture had a much smaller Attendence.

I actually think the owners, through the welcome to Wrexham show played the Welsh heritage card very well. They make it seem interesting and unique to audiences, which has made it fascinating to some audiences.

I have, like many people in Stoke, some links to Wales and my cousins who live in Vermont, have shown a distinct interest in exploring their own Welsh roots due to the show.

Wrexham could become the Welsh “national” league team, as they are the only Welsh side I have seen which have really played on Welsh nationalism well.

Cardiff City feel like they are pushed to the side in a rugby area and trips to Swansea never felt like I was in Wales, just another uni town.

Certainly football in the North of Wales is bigger and holds great potential.

In Welsh language terms Wrexham is about 85% English speaking. There is a massive difference working in Wrexham for a few months to working further into Wales at Caernarfon. The later is a full blown Welsh first language town and it's football team plays in the League of Wales.

Wrexham is close to Chester, Cheshire West and the Wirral (where I live). The English bordering areas look to Liverpool, Everton, Tranmere and the Manchester clubs. Even Tranmere is within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral and has access to a population bigger than the Potteries for support. Whereas, Wrexham has access to small town support in North Wales and it most definitely isn't garnishing support from the Welsh speaking areas like Caernarfon. So that support base is bounded to the West, East and indeed South.

There isn't a viable comparison between North Wales and South Wales. North Wales is made up of rural area interspersed with small towns. South Wales has three major conurbations in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport etc. So take Cardiff. Plays consistently at Championship level, population 365k. Population of Wrexham, 45k. How can Wrexham ever garnish the support needed to be continuously sustainable at anything above L1?

Rubbish. Have a look at their attendances through the years. Take away Reynolds, you take away over half their attendance. Wrexham is a small town in Wales. The support they have now is as big as it ever has been. Most people in North Wales support Liverpool and United.

Had a family do here in North Somerset two weeks ago: brother in law was over from Aspen. Got talking that I needed to get back to watch the football as kick off was 3pm.

He let it slip that he and the whole family "supported" Wrexham. "we love Wrexham in our family". Yes Hollywood can do that.

But one day Tinseltown will be gone. I wonder how they'll get along then.

Back to today:  confident of a win today if we played like we played against Mansfield. Mr Ladbrokes has a crisp tenner on this in my name.

Come on Vale!!

Wasn’t one Saturday afternoon and the other a cold Monday night plus we took loads there?

Anyway, Lincoln are just as big as both. 1-2 Vale. Let’s be positive.

We took shed loads there, it was a massive top of the table Derby clash (because that's how Vale/Wrexham fixtures were viewed at the time).

Wrexham's average home attendances max out at 12.5k one year in the 1970's and have plenty of 5-9ks in there. But during their long decline this century they fell back to much lower figures.

Wrexham is different than Port Vale geographically. I think its harder to pinpoint what it's core support might be.

You may be right. But at our level, financial fair play rules prevent just paying for a bigger and better team than the inherent club couldn't otherwise afford. Yes they can do improvements to the stadium and increase its economic potential.

What they can't do is bung the team millions. Wrexham is inherently a club with support max at about 10k on a good day. If the owners want it to be more than a L1/2 club they have to sustaibly change the historic nature of Wrexham by increasing support et al.

I think there are significant limitations to doing that. I like Wrexham as a place, but it's not Manchester etc. It doesn't have much international appeal as a partly Welsh language place. Plus it's a very small city of 45k in the built up area.

It's a nice project for the owners to have, but they ain't going very far with it.

They can afford to pay big bucks for players and get pass the FFP rules because of the income that club is generating.

The club gets paid £400k per episode of Welcome to Wrexham

Over two series that's £13.2 million

I read some where that they sold over 90,000 replica shirts and god knows what companies like Tik Tok, United Airlines, Vistaprint are paying but I'm guessing that they are not paying anything like your normal League one & Two clubs get.

The money this club is generating just because of the their owners is ridiculous

I'm not bothered about what Wrexham have got and can spend.  We have got a true fan who owns us and has spent a lot more than she thought.  Will always be grateful for them for saving the club I love

Exactly CLV, I'm also grateful with our current situation but some "Hollywood type publicity" would be nice.

Just as an add on, I watch the Welcome to Wrexham program and the "Hollywood owners" are certainly invested in the project and  investing in the town/people via the football club, the ground and both the men's and women's teams and probably the Junior teams. just how long it will continue only the owners know.
