Match Thread: Cambridge United v Port Vale

Talk from their end that they have a few injuries to key players. They've had a pretty tough run of fixtures in fairness, so not entirely unexpected that they're on a bad run.

Historically, we always struggle on tight pitches and end up booting it to noone.

Let's hope we are starting to find a bit of consistency.

I'd definitely be bringing Pett or Walker in (whilst Ojo is out), especially for an away game, perhaps Pett on a tighter pitch where you need someone who's better in tight areas (Walker better with more space). That leaves Garrity to rat and break beyond Wilson, as he did to great effect last year. Think I'd have Butterworth as starter in home games tho, works really well with Ellis up top and then Butterworth in left channel, Wilson in right channel, both playing on the half-turn and running at the opposition.

At the back, whilst Jones has played well, I'd be tempted to bring Hall back in, both for his height and the fact that he combines better with Benning, as we saw last season. If we play Jones, my view is that we need to play a right footer at LWB (maybe Woz?), as Jones always drifts out wide when he gets the ball, meaning if he does pass to the LWB, the ball is coming to them straight up the line, which favours a right-footer who can then cut inside (this may be where the lack of a like-for-like replacement for Gibbo is most keenly felt). Hall drives straighter with the ball, meaning there's room for the pass outside, and for the left-footed LWB to take the ball on ahead of them, which is what Benning thrives on.

On the right, I reckon both Massey and Woz are better with Cass, think it's much of a muchness and they both have a lot to offer, but away we might be better off sticking with the more solid CB/RCB pairing of Smith and Forrester, and using Massey's pace. Can always switch it at HT either way.

So I'd go

                            Stevens

            Forrester   Smith      Hall

Massey           Pett      Conlon        Benning

                             Garrity

                    Wilson      Harrison

With Woz, Politic, Butterworth, Mipo and Cass as your main options off the bench.

Car Parking:

Cambridge Retail Park on New Market Road, same side as the Abbey Stadium driving towards the city (5-10 min walk from there) and up to 4h free parking, then the Beehive retail park almost next door on the same road is 3h free parking (closer to the city so less time free since a bit longer walk but you can walk across Coldham’ Common from there that backs onto the away end - akin to Bycars Park but mind out for cows and cow pats.

A return to our old uni for a lot of us I imagine 😌

Huge game (again) which could go either way… I remember losing 5:0 here think it was last game if the season when we went down? Great day that was !!

No use predicting the team…. DC will have a plan in his head for the next 3 games at least. I just have a feeling Mipo may start … maybe instead of Wilson.. I don’t think even Smudger is safe this week.

it’s great to look forward to games again instead of dreading them. UTV

Stoke lost to Palace and were relegated from the Prem in the early Saturday kick off, so we trudged to Cambridge euphoric.

We were then absolutely battered and Aspin came over to apologise if my memory is correct. A disgraceful performance.

Vale team that day featured from the start, Sam Horby in goal, Joe Davis and Callum Howe in defence, Tonge and Pugh in midfield, Angus up front and on the bench we had Dan Turner, Mike Calverly, Harry Benns, Ryan Boot and Tyrone Barnett.

Looks like Morsy just got his fifth booking of the season so will miss the game next Tuesday?

I watched it too. Hadn’t realised that and was wishing him a second booking or his injury got worse. Their midfield seemed very mobile and quick.
