dwindling crowds/atmosphere

Hello fellow valiants :) very rarely do i post nowadays because i was one of the people wanting page out after his negative playstyle on the pitch was boring me to death and i didnt want to start sounding like a broken record wanting yet another manager out . unfortunately this negativity around the club seems to have spread to the crowds at home. i wouldve thought that a more pleasing on the eye style of play i.e not micky adams long ball game wouldve brought some more people thru the turnstyles and yes while our away form is still unbelievably bad at home our record is pretty good. there are a lot of clubs far worse off than us at the moment so just what is keeping the fans away? and can anything be done to improve the gates and atmosphere as i have a feeling our first sub 3000 gate is coming soon......

It's a trend, apart from eight clubs all the crowds in League One are down this season?

I have a season ticket and i chose not to go tonight. So its not anything to do with the cost. I think its down to a combination of things

1. Consistent PR gaffs over a number of seasons from the chairman undermining supporters confidence

2. The very unprofessional way Page was forced out of the club. Getting rid of a young manager who was slowly building a team that was gradually progressing

3. Releasing most of the first team squad including good players such as Dodds and O'Connor.

4. The appointment of a foreign manager with a questionsble record and a poor grasp of English

5. Replacing them with a 36 man squad largely made up of low grade foreigners who make 30 minute cameo roles and then arent seen for months.

6. Dreadful performances punctuated by brief periods of good football that somehow get us out of the ****.

I wonder what we'd be like now if Page had had the support of the chairman and the kind of financial investment afforded to Bruno?

It sure is, and it's not all down to performances.

How many people who fancy going tonight but don't have a season ticket will pay £23.00?

Football admission costs are far, far too much for pay-on-the-day casual fans.

A whole generation of people think football started in 1992.

All-seater stadia have had a huge impact on atmosphere.

I'm actually starting to fear for a lot of 3rd and 4th division clubs long-term (us included).

Football is no longer part of the weekend ritual for many young people, so something must be done to attract a new crowd.

I also normally think you talk nonsense but that's all correct.

I don't think there is a simple answer to the attendance / atmosphere situation, league 1&2 football is dying due to the astronomical amounts of money that are given to the Premiership, Stoke City offer free away travel to all Premiership games, so effectively a person can travel to Arsenal watch the game and be better off than a Vale fan travelling to Shrewsbury next week... we simply cannot compete. I sat in the Railway Paddock tonight, awful facilities, if it were down to me I would close the stand, take out the seats and use them to finish the Lorne Street stand.... I have long been an advocate of moving to a new purpose built stadium, I have had some great times at Vale Park, I don't honestly see those days coming back again any time soon, the rich clubs are getting richer and those that are left are fighting for the scraps....

Dodds and O Connor weren't released.

I'm guessing most of that happened before season tickets were on sale. Why did you buy one?
