Brilliant article, bringing back many memories of outstanding promotion campaigns. Personally difficult to pick out the best, but for me special individual performances include John James’s penalty area bravery and goal poaching and Roy Sproson’s towering defending 1969-70, an incredible Jimmy Greenhoff volley scoring at home to York City 1983, Dean Glover’s (impersonation of Bobby Moore at his best) superb debut against Wolves 1988-89, Andy Jones’s predatory scoring rate 1985-86, and Tom Pope’s prolific season 2012-13. You could go on all day about special players and matches, but these promotion seasons are what it’s all about for club followers. The worst memory ? Stuck in the top far end corner of an old wooden stand at Preston’s Deepdale when fire broke out at the 1988-89 first leg promotion play off. The match was temporarily suspended while the fire brigade extinguished what could have been a total tragedy for one and all.
