OVF has reproduced this image of Port Vale’s 1958 side. It’s pictured on the front of Soccer Star magazine.
In the publication’s own words the side were “staying clear of any Division Three troubles.” However, although the Vale finished in a creditable 15th position, the side still dropped a division.
Why? Because… in an unfortunate twist of fate, all teams below 13 position in League Three (North and South) were placed in a new division, called Division Four.
However, Vale were to bounce back with a vengeance. The following season, Vale scored an astonishing 110 goals to finish as Division Four’s first champions, four points clear of second placed Coventry City.
