Thanks to Stuart Dean, we have a short documentary clip of Port Vale’s 1954 record-breaking side.
Edited from the “Up the Vale” VHS tape, the clip contains footage of the FA Cup giantkilling over Blackpool and Port Vale’s FA Cup semi-final appearance.
About the 1953-1954 Port Vale Iron Curtain season
The 1953-54 season is arguably Port Vale’s greatest-ever season. Managed by Freddie King, a settled Port Vale side of mostly locally-born players set several club records which still stand today. The side coasted to the Third Division North title while they also reached the semi-final of the FA Cup where they were unlucky to lose to West Bromwich Albion.
The side’s defence was so good the team became known as the “Iron Curtain” or “Steele Curtain” side.
Members of that legendary side included goalkeeper Ray King, defenders Roy Sproson and Tommy Cheadle, forward Albert Leake and wingers Dickie Cunliffe and Colin Askey.
