1969: a cup epic and a chat with Gordon
We take a look at some FA Cup photos from the 1969-70 season plus a profile and interview with then-Vale manager Gordon Lee.
The following photos and report are from an epic FA Cup clash with Wigan Athletic. It took Vale three games to dispose of their Northern Premier League opponents. The first game (at Springfield Park) ended 1-1, the replay (at Vale Park) ended 2-2 and the second replay (at Old Trafford) ended 1-0 to the Valiants. John James scored two minutes from the end of extra-time to finally kill off the non-leaguers.
Next, we have an interview with manager Gordon Lee. The whole interview is shown below.
This scrapbook with cuttings from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s was kindly provided to OVF by a long-standing Port Vale supporter.

Under Gordon Lee Vales league position improved for 5 seasons in a row. We weren’t known for our attractive football but we stopped being a soft touch and Gordon gave the fans a team they could be proud of again.
