Feeling very despondent

Recommended Posts

Height, strength, fitness. Those are three things that testing and analytics can tell us, so that should be fairly straightforward. Though we have let in some real amateur hour goals I don't think in general the back line is too bad. The big problem is letting in 75% of the shots on target. Not even the top teams could gain points operating like that, so we need a new no.1 and making them a higher proportion of the budget would probably be worth the money.

well with the announcement that wilson has left. im feeling a bit sad that its the end of the honeymoon period.  this next season is going to be a struggle. even more so than this year. to let someone go of his absolute quality is a blow. yes hes had his injury problems and has spent more time on the sidelines than fit this year but i dunno im just hoping we bring in some real quality. or we are doomed.

Medics, man down.

Players will leave and as fans we wished they had stayed, but that is football.  Willo was very good - when available and in the last season he became a bit player, needing a couple of sub games to get back to his standard and then he broke down again.

Other players leaving - again we wished had stayed and we also have players we would have cheered had left the club - but didn't.  Hopefully AC and Co will replace them with better players who are league 1 ready and want to play for the shirt and not just another pay packet.  Those that have stayed - well you can only hope they are played in their right positions and we see the best of them.

Wilson was brilliant for us. Never ceased to amaze me how he came back from those injuries but so composed on the ball and would ping across a defence splitting pass with ease. We still offered him a contract, so clearly felt he was good enough for next season.
On the flip side his injury record isn’t great and he got released from Salford for being underwhelming…..in league 2.
Even so, I have little faith that the money will be spent on a decent replacement. I also think this cost cutting is a false economy, as the money that was spent has paid off with record crowds, shirt sales and hospitality, Won’t be getting that watching a rubbish side.

This myth that Carol has spent millions on the ground to justify reigning in the expenditure is a load of old lies. Look at the aerial pictures of the pitch development released today, the ground has the same old tired Bratt area seats (in fact some of the railway ones are bell era), except the newer yellow ones in the section of the Lorne Street Smurfwaite bought cheap from Watford. The tops of the stands are covered in grime and aside from the new turnstiles, the matchday experience isn’t that much improved unless you’re in hospitality. Smurfwaite built the whole new club shop didn’t he? Which was perhaps the most significant new development since the Lorne Street.
15k fans for the championship Carol reckons, well Peterborough’s average is roughly 1k more than ours and they just spanked Sheff W 4-0. Whatever model they have, we would do well to copy.

Even with player sales Peterborough are almost 20 million in debt to the owners and the director that owns the stadium has just gone bump which to me says there is no sustainable way to run a football club.

Guarantee if they go up that debt will mysteriously vanish and won’t be heard of again until they are back in league 1. Although you’re right, that they have take big financial gambles.

This is a negative post too!  WV is not "talking rubbish" in my view - he's allowed to express an opinion, since that is what this forum is for.  Saying that some fans will feel despondent about losing a quality player, albeit one that has been plagued with injury, isn't negative, it's just how some people are feeling about it.  Maybe it doesn't fit in with your view of the world, and yes, you are entitled to give an opinion too.  But I think you are wrong.

However, to make this a positive post, and remove the negativity that is flying around, here's a picture of some Titanic beer.  And yes I know the ship sunk and the captain was from Hanley, so that's kinda negative too, but it's just an opinion - and it's not rubbish.

What about signing it off with we are doomed

The Sun of course make it sound like we have forced Wilson onto the dole…

Your typical news headline now adays.  Totally hyped up by some editor looking to make a name for themself.  You then read the story and go - why the headline.  Make it sound really bad, when actually its a none story.  Are they going to do this for every player let go by a football club?

15 goals the previous season and some priceless ones at that. As some have previously noted, teams put him as our danger man who could hurt them and they hurt him instead unfortunately with viscious tackles

15 goals in League Two doesn't make Wilson a Championship standard player.

It's the subtlety of his play that we havent seen very often that really is above league one, but of course  I accept that we havent seen it often enough

Well that's just it. I don't even consider what he can do at his best because we never see it. He spends what seems to be the majority of his time nowhere near 100% fit and also desperately scrambling to find some form. Having one good game every 5 or 6 games is the definition of a luxury player.

Mate, he only scored four goals last season and was hardly on the pitch. Thanks for the memories, but it's a see you later.

End of season with a number of players released and positions needed to be filled, especially up front where goals win games, will leave anybody feeling despondent or anxious.

We had a number of loan strikers and only now Ellis on the books who we likely need to build around.

I'm less sad that Wilson has left, great player when he can play but he didn't play anywhere near enough that we need. Numbers are thin at the moment obviously.

But we are in the middle of May and nothing is going to get sorted right this second overnight. Lets see where the team & recruitment is looking at in July/August time 🙂

Not bothered about Wilson personally .
Tremendous in league 2 .
Overall league 1 I ain't really seen anything at all what suggests he stepped up.
Just the odd good performance .
We move ON
Just a question
How do you feel about the other 4 players on retained list .
Will people go into breakdown over Worrall etc
Garrity
Jones
Benning .
I personally wouldn't be bothered in the slightest if Worrall goes ,same with Benning .
Garrity and Jones different matter altogether they were leaders .
Let's see what squad is going unto first game before throwing in the towel .
It's defeatist .
I see nothing in this league nothing at all that with the right recruitment we cannot improve our league position and overall stats in the coming season .
We have had a look at league now its not that good in my opinion just need get a centre half who is brave blocks long range goal attempts and a goalkeeper who saves most teams one attempt on target .
Surely we can at least find that requirement.

Dan Jones has played 47 games in 2 seasons, therefore missing 45.

For some reason his injuries never get talked about as much as Wilson. Not sure why because he's equally as much a waste of a wage.

Connor Hall came in and took the focus away from Jones.  We noticed Jones missing more after Shrews this season when our defence was threadbare.

We’ve noticed Wilson missing more because we don’t have much attacking quality in the squad in general.

To set some context, have a look at our leading goal scorers this season:

Despite only making 25 appearances and never completing 90 minutes in any game, Wilson still finished as our joint second leading scorer along with Butterworth and Taylor, highlighting how weak we were as a team in creating and putting away chances.

Big wake up call, methinks.

Taylor made even fewer appearances!
