Or, on the flip side the management don’t know which players will adapt to the higher division and will wait until January to see where we need strengthening and how we are performing in the higher division.

Saying that, we all know we need at least one more striker.

Or on the flip side, there's still weeks left of the summer to get deals done. I still think Vale will only use January if there are injuries. Last January we had two injured strikers and injuries to Conlon and Gibbo to cover for. For me, that's why we did so much activity then.

Bristol Rovers were playing Melksham Town, and Carlisle were playing Penrith. Lets not get carried away with ex-Vale players scoring against poor opposition as it means little.

If you take last season's Vale pre-season programme. Eden Bailey and Kamani McFarland scored two each. Jamie Proctor scored none. Which of the three had the bigger impact on the season proper?

I honestly can't see why some are getting so panicky. Even if we went into the season with the squad as it stands, for me, we're only missing 2 backup strikers, a RWB, and a GK. Of our normal first 11, which ones are not good enough from what we've seen for League 1? Very few, if any, IMHO. Worrall possibly, and Stone. You can argue that the backups may struggle, but even then I'd be confident that most could step up.

I would say a fit Worrall is good enough for league 1 and at the age he is, Stone will get better

FWIW I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s it for deals, I would expect a few very promising season long loans to come in though from top clubs. Save some groats in case a splash is needed in January.

Whatever happens, I will judge the success or failure of this window in January.

I’d be fairly confident there’ll be more permanent signings after reading what Flickers said about the Ojo signing, along the lines of needing more players with experience of the level to add to what we’ve already got.  You’d guess that we’ll also add a couple of younger loans from the Prem or Championship based on previous comments from him.

I’d agree with you regarding Jan.  I think the process seems to be one of continual improvement in each window, far more than in the past.  Whilst our hand was forced last January by injuries, fingers crossed we aren’t blighted this season, there were moves like Hall <~> Legge, which was an outstanding bit of business, no disrespect to Big Leon intended, and quite a high turnover of players.

And on that point... there seems to be doom and gloom that some of the more high profile free agents have been signed.

Last season, we had a number of transfer FEES which strengthened us - Garrity and Hall were great signings but we also paid fees for Hussey and Charsley (who both played their part) so we're not adverse to doing it.

I don't think we should treat this window like previous regimes and get fed up because some of the free agents Vale are normally in the running for have gone.

I am sure that the club will also consider paying a fee for a player under contract if the right one is available.

And we have weeks left of this window to do business in before we have to think about January.

The sports analysis and judgement about players fitting in is much deeper / better than in the past. Also in some positions, we have got players who didn't get in the team in the last half season but are capable of doing so this season. Conlon most obviously, but I think Jones is also like a new signing. So I am looking for astute signings maybe as small as couple and likely not more than four. I think we should leave alone so called big name players because there is a sort of falsehood about it at our level, there actually aren't any big name players, they are an illusion. I also think a small number of our players will leave and particularly where for their career they need to play. That creates opportunity.

That's along my line of thinking, Rob.  I wouldn't be surprised to see money being spent on a decent front man.

We’ve shown that with Conor Hall signing we are more savvy in the transfer market these days. In terms of the overall effect he had on the team, got to be up there with the Glover signing. If he’d have played against Newport I’m certain we’d have gone up automatically because that first goal just wouldn’t have happened. In hindsight, perhaps a good job he didn’t!!!

John Aldridge - an astute and relatively expensive signing, but one that transformed the club for a decade or more.

Aldridge returned to Merseyside on 11 July 1991 with Tranmere Rovers, in a £250,000 deal. While there he scored a club-record 40 goals in his first season at Prenton Park – scoring his 40th goal against former club Oxford United. Tranmere, who were playing in the Second Division for the first time in more than 50 years, achieved a mid-table finish in the league.

Aldridge made his debut for Rovers aged 32 on 17 August 1991 scoring both the goals in the 2–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Goldstone Ground. In seven years as a Tranmere player, he amassed a total of 294 appearances for the Birkenhead club scoring 174 goals, a goal every 1.7 games, including 22 goals from just 25 League Cup ties. Aldridge retired at the end of the 1997-98 season, scoring a brace in his last ever game as a professional against Wolverhampton Wanderers.[22]

His goals also helped them reach their highest position ever in the league – top-six finishes in the second tier in 1993, 1994 and 1995 – which delivered playoff places each time, but all of them ended in semi-final defeats.
