Summer transfer targets/rumours, retained list etc

Firstly Gibbo didn’t have to leave, he chose to for money.  You can see from players Rovers have signed that they’re throwing a bit of cash around.  Secondly, the staff don’t make these decisions on a whim, they stand or fall by the standard of players in the squad.

Personally I think Gibbo will have a great season and will be a miss, but we couldn’t match what he was offered elsewhere.  Simple as that.

Gibbo did what he felt was best for him, DC did what he thought was best for the club. Personally felt Gibbo drove us forward and provided grit in the team, as someone has already said a future captain. Equally was surprised when in a previous debate someone said he had played only 27 games out of a potential 90 games in the last 2 seasons . Understand Gibbo was offered a low basic with additional payments on a pay as you play basis. Get why the club did that, understand why Gibbo took a conventional 2 yr deal from Rovers. Time will tell who was right.

If gibbo stayed he would have been the lowest paid player at the club. I understand injury concerns but the offer was insulting at best. Players signed in January we’re on much more than he was will his previous contract.

If he’d backed himself to play games, then he would have been on a good wage. Obviously has doubts himself about his ability to play 40 games a season.

Problem with all the statistical analysis of a players performance is that it doesn't measure character. We are obviously trying to stamp out "character" where it makes a player difficult to handle off the pitch. Might be better for performance/results but is nothing like as entertaining or engaging for the fans.

If what I have been told is to be believed, it was more that Gibbo's offer was miles below other players within the salary cap. He didn't want to be the top earner but the offer effectively gave him no choice. I'm a fan of the salary cap but this isn't an example of it's merit as Gibbo would have been quite happy to sit on a wage well within it - Flitcroft didn't value him the same! It wasn't just that others were paid more, but the offer gave him no choice but to look elsewhere (and he had more offers than just Rovers and us). It was that low in base pay.

You can choose to believe this or not but I'm confident it's accurate.

So is all that you are saying fact ( if what I’ve been told)( Gibbo would have been quite happy)( he didn’t want to be top earner) etc . or just heresay.

Bristol is a much more expensive area to live in than North Staffs. He would need more money or a discounted house to justify moving there. Taking the opposite PV perspective Gibbo has done well when fit. But his downtime has been very high. When I say he has done well I think he was a good League 1 player in a League 2 team. So given there are others out there that could be at or above his level and fitter the harsh but objective decision has been taken not to meet his wage expectations whatever they were.

The tone of your post appears to indicate this being fact .
Just interested to know how you know this to be true if it is ?
Genuine question not intended to make out I’m having a go 👍

I’ve got no bad blood towards Gibbo, and I’m certainly not bitter about his move to Rovers. I, for one, genuinely believe he’ll go onto bigger and better things over the next few years.

In terms of the offer Vale put forward to Gibbo, Chris Birchall suggested that he’d doubled his wage at Rovers. I’d imagine Vale had probably looked at his injury record and games played compared to others, and probably offered him a wage in which they believed was fair, in relation to the past few years. Whereas, I’d imagine Rovers have looked at Gibbo the talent, and figured out he’s a damn good footballer, offering a hell of a lot more than we have.

We can all sit here and debate the matter, but I genuinely don’t believe for one second Gibbo wanted to leave the Vale for a club in the same division, but I don’t think he had much choice, which is a shame.

I trust DC and Flickers, so let’s hope whoever comes in at RWB makes a similar lasting impressing on the Vale faithful.

No necessarily. It's a big place and there's lot of price variation as there is in other big cities.

That's from someone (me) who used to live in Bristol and is moving back to the SW.
