But, the post 2010 governments have borrowed more than all previous Labour governments, that's also a fact. Admittedly that doesn't take in to account the size of the economy but if you look solely at borrowing, Bycars Tony was stating an easily verifiable fact (albeit one that only tells half of the story).

Osbourne did not do a good job when chancellor but as you said there is a lot more to it than the debt plus you also have to bear in mind that we saw some boom years under Blair and Brown whereby they used all the money we had without saving plus sold off all our gold and then we entered a large global recession just at the end of Browns reign meaning things were always going to get tougher.

What is verifiable is that current government borrowing this financial year is set to be around the £50billion mark, which is higher than I'd personally like, but at about 2.3% of GDP is only slightly ahead of the original target of 2.0% which is also not far from what the average has been over many years.  What you and BycarsTony should really be worrying about is both the Conservative and Labour's published.spending commitments.  Any economist will point out to you that Public spending has a much more immediate impact on the economy than borrowing does.  In fact that's why at the end of the Labour years in 2010, when public spending reached unprecedented heights under Gordon Brown, Liam Byrne (the then Labour chief secretary to the treasury) famously wrote:  "There's no money left".  And, that my friends, as anyone who understands econonomics will tell you, is why public spending had to be cut back so drastically (otherwise known as austerity to some of you) to try and get back to some fiscal sensibility.

Both main parties are suggesting with their election promises that public spending levels will rise to levels not seen since the 1970s--when Britain was last in the <ovf censored> and was the sick economy of Europe--unfortunately I am old enough to have been around at that time and sadly, remember it all too well!  Whilst I don't like the suggested profligacy of the Tories with the recent analysis by the Resolution Foundation suggesting that public spending would rise to 41.3% of GDP by 2023.  At least that is still under the 42% average seen between 1966 and 1984.  Labour's existing plans, which include the £48.6 billion of additional spending it committed in their 2017 manifesto and the £250 billion ten-year capital plan of John McDonnel (and that doesn't take into account any further far-fetched Labour spending promises in their upcoming manifesto!) would increase public spending to nearly 43.5% of GDP--well above anything we've ever seen before and much higher than in those economically-troubled years in the 1970s when we really were well & truly up <ovf censored> creek without the proverbial paddle!

A Barbara Castle joke from the 60s

This really made me laugh. Angela Smith, she who helped set up Change UK, described a woman of colour as being a "funny tinge" and then defected to the LibDems, has found out that due to standing in a different constituency, she won't be entitled to the redundancy payment that ousted MPs get.

"I honestly consider I am being discriminated against." 😂

Imagine complaining openly to the public about the fact that a large quantity of taxpayers’ money will not be going into your pockets for no reason.

Imagine thinking that they would care and take your side.

I'm sure she will be well remunerated by the private water companies as compensation for her sterling work for them during her parliamentary career.

They will probably back down to her request. They shouldn’t do, how many people would expect full redundancy if they went to work for the opposition?. Made me laugh when she said she had served our country for 14 years!! I don’t know an MP who can honestly claim that.

And that baloney about how she 'had to move to another party'. Why didn't she stay with Mike Gapes and Woke Soubz in The Independent Change Network Group (or whatever they're called this week)? An MP who earns extra money from being in the pocket of the water industry practically sobbing and demanding 22k of taxpayers money because she wants an easy ride in a new constituency. In a pretty grim year, the Change UK farce has been a real bright spot.

Presuming everyone is as appalled as I am about Jacob Rees Mogg and Andrew Bridgen's comments about Greenfell tonight?

Only read a snippet of moggs comment..... not appalled at what I read.

Not shocked the fire brigade got it wrong and gave bad advice.

Instinctively  I would try to leave a building if it was on fire, I'm not sure I would listen to advice from anyone to stay inside.

Yes. Rees Mogg said one appalling thing, and then went back on it when the uproar came.

Andrew Bridgen said hold my coat and said something even more hideous.
