Shopping list

The transfer list is only meaningful if someone comes to buy the players.

The Bosman era means players can sit out their contracts.

Barnett has done enough to suggest that although I’d let him go on a 1 year deal, the one year he has left could be used for him to contribute.

Can't say i share your enthusiasm for Barnett mate, shown very very little .

I agree, not often a player really irritates me but he does. I can accept it if someone just isn't good enough but Barnett is just plain lazy. He showed against Exeter he can do it if he wants to but far, far too often it's just too much like effort for him. If I thought he could be motivated into trying his best I'd want to keep him but he's just bumbled through to pay day every week all season. Waste of a wage which can be spent better elsewhere.

Great idea, get him in and playing well for us and then let him go because he wants too much money... Mark Marshall anyone?

He wouldn't be the first player to leave for more money would he?

Marshy's biggest mistake was saying he wanted to move nearer home in London and then sign for Bradford?😂

Would actually quite like to see Kjell given an opportunity. He's ready to come back into full training now and has apparently said he wants to stay and prove his worth.

In a game that is becoming increasingly bereft of sentiment, it would be nice to see a foreign lad come to the club, stick with us through a horrendous injury, and end up making a comeback in a Vale shirt he had no connection to before he arrived. I don't know, maybe its a bit wishy-washy, would just like to see he's got a 6 month, low wage high bonus deal. He was pretty decent when he played too (and is a lovely bloke, not that that should play into it much).

Just would be a nice story.

Can't see it happening, doesn't seem like Aspin's sort of player before. Would be a shame.

Priorities in order:

First choice experienced and reliable gk to marshal our inexperienced defence and give them confidence

Quality central midfielder to dominate games

Striker to partner Pope- quick and hard-working

CB to partner Smith (Howkins or Anderson would be good)

Left sided player versatile to play left back or wing.

Add these to Pope, Hannant, Worrall, Kay, Gibbo, Monty and that would be a reasonable first 11.

Backed up by a bench of Hornby, Pugh, Whitfield, Turner, Angus and another defender and that would make for a reasonably settled squad. With about five of the very young players developing at the club and as emergency back up plus the loan system to use sparingly for emergency long term cover of injuries and that might be more effective than the transfer shenanigans seen in the previous two summer's.

Glasgow rangers signing an experienced goalkeeper,I wonder if Alnwick will be on his way out.

I think it's more likely that Foderingham moves on, he's been angling for a more lucrative move for a while now. In any case, Alnwick wouldn't come back to us, more likely to join a Championship club IMO.

Whilst we're talking about non league, someone I've had my eye on for a while is Jack Powell at Ebbsfleet. 24yo centre midfielder who gets goals - 19 in 74 appearances so around 1 in 4 in non league. He's got 9 goals this season too and is a bit of a free kick specialist.

We definitely need more goals from midfield so I'd hope we would be looking at someone of his ilk.

A midfield three of Kay, Hannant and Powell would be excellent with Kay sitting in and Hannant and Powell bombing forward.

Good shout I'd guess Aspin will have one or two in mind from the Conference that have impressed him at that level. Having said that I always tend to think we have little chance with players from London or even down south full stop. Not saying we can't compete with Ebbsfleet(god help us if we can't tbh) but how many southerners are in our squad? Not many, off the top of my head I think most of our players are northerners or from the midlands! As much as we ought to be able to pay more than clubs like that(Ebbsfleet, Borehamwood et al) it's got to be a big pay rise for someone to uproot from the London area and move to the midlands. Not a criticism of Vale as I reckon a lot of clubs of similar ilk to us in the north/midlands will have a squad make up very similar.

Non league isn't the only likely source, careful recruitment from higher club's reserves has served us well in the past.

Very true, we need a good blend. The likes of McPhee, Bridge-Wilkinson, Cummins and Brooker all came from the kind of club your referring too. All late teens/early 20s when they came to us and no massive amount of experience to speak of but excellent players at what is League One level for us. When you look back they were a class act on what we have now!

Attracting players from the National League is not going to be as easy as we might think. Many of them have rich owners whose sole purpose in buying them was to get them into League football. Ebbsfleet is a particularly good example as they have a rich middle east owner who recently forked out a cool £5m to build them a new stand, with more to follow. The list also includes Salford, Fylde, and Billericay:

The football league is going to look very different in 5 years time and this is why we need an owner who is prepared to pay the going rate for players if we are to remain a competitive club. Over to you, Norman!

Hornby is obviously up to the job in my opinion. I think Roos is better than him, being older, but he has gone. No other goalie i saw last season at Vale is better. I do not want Neal back. I think he is getting old and was diminished after his injury before leaving Vale. Sorry to say that about Neal, but football is competitive sport and ruthless.

I wouldn't really want Chris Neal back, either - a very good keeper on a good day...bit of a flapper on a bad one! Roos might be a good shout - thought he was settling in nicely, and improved game by game. Also think Hornby could handle being no. 1? Not so sure I'd get rid of Boot - taken out of the pressure keg of fighting relegation, and learning his trade alongside a bit more experience, he could develop as he might have done had the situation been better this year? Play him in the Checkatrade which gives the no. 1 keeper a breather.

Can play in 2 positions, so bang on Aspo's type of player - plus he was decent in a dreadful season, in a higher League - got to be worth a punt to see if he's recovered from his injury?
