Stoke by--election

Skybet are offering 4/6 on a turnout lower than 36.5%. That must be a good bet given the weather conditions/voter apathy?

I went to vote at about 8.30. There was no one else around apart from the officials. We chatted to a couple of them for 5 minutes before leaving and no one else had come in to vote. On Referendum Day we went at about the same time and it was a lot busier. I'm sure the turn out will be poor as usual.

If you want a protest vote, forget Ukip, this is your man. Im not sure what message it would send to the establishment to vote him in, but id like it.

I asked one bloke why he was voting for the Brick and he said "because his promises are more realistic than any of the others".

Say no more.

That would be sooo good. A genuine protest vote that really would send a message, just like Hartlepool did voting in H'Angus the Monkey. Highly unlikely to happen though. The likelihood of a low turnout will be both embarrassing for the area, suggesting apathy in a hugely depressed constituency, and disappointing because of the level of political disengagement shown. I'd love to see a decent turnout because although I now live in the Staffs Moorlands constituency I'm Stoke-on-Trent born and bred and I'm desperate to see it have an economic revival which won't happen unless the population become reinvigorated, something that will probably need an outside influence to get going.

Can't wait for Question Time tonight, it could be like a chimps tea party with a bit of UFC thrown in.

In order to attract more jobs and more diverse jobs the city needs a higher level of educational attainment and also needs to be attractive enough to retain its graduates and young professionals. Bit of a chicken and egg situation perhaps but it ties up with the studies cited in the Voter Intelligence thread.

There are plenty of intelligent people in the city but there hasn't always been the culture among its inhabitants to go out and get the certificates that prove it.

Newsnight was from Stoke last night, panel and audience.Pretty much what you are saying on the programme Santa. You may not agree with this but would grammar schools not give education a boost in the area? There are also 2 Universities in the city(ish).Ive always thought that if people want to be educated they will be.Like you say there are some bright people in the city. Those people are probably self motivated in any case. The facilities are there but need to be improved before University level.Too many younger people in the area give up before they realise they need to get educated.

But you raise another point. Why should everybody have to be University educated to have a good stndard of living or lifestyle?? Ths is the message that UKIP have tryed to hammer home for ages and the importance of learning trades and having low skilled base with better wages. The reality is not everyone is going to be a lawyer or Doctor...wake up Stoke!!! Before it's too late!

Jack Brereton has done a pretty decent job as the cabinet member for Regeneration, Heritage and Transport. Very forward thinking in some of his ideas and he's been at the forefront with the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone among other schemes.

But the problem is he represents a party which wants to write off Working class people and unemployed and disabled. His party also want to make it harder for small business to survive. His party also hate the Northern working class cities and only bend over for council's such as Surrey and Westminster
