Stoke by--election

Bea Smith

Recommended Posts

Odds on a Conservative win have been tumbling all day. Labour fanboys on the ground in Stoke are shocked by their response whilst canvassing and are petrified of a defeat here. Nutall is simply odd and the wrong candidate for UKIP to win this constituency.

Is it time for S-O-T to finally see the light and vote Tory?

Unlikely. Too many people in Stoke are backward thinking and happy to carry on as has been for the last 100 years.

Because the Tories have really moved things forward the last 7 years?

I can imagine the loss of libraries, swimming pools and sure start, along with drastic cuts to support for people with disabilities, and the enormous crisis the NHS is going through might, just might, put people off voting Tory.

Labour, governing in Stoke since 1950.Let us continue the good work by giving us your vote.

😂

An MP doesn't govern an area....

Speaking of governing Stoke-on-Trent though, the current Council (led by the City Independents with the support of the Conservatives) is planning to drastically cut children's services across the City.

Jack Brereton, the Conservative candidate for S-o-T central, is a key figure in that Council and in implementing those cuts. His party has also presided over the crippling of Local Authority services nationwide.

Not sure that cutting children's services, physical activity budgets and public health spending is especially forward thinking either.

Getting back to the by-election and Stoke Central.

This seat has the highest unemployment rates of the three Stoke seats with 6.2% of workless registered unemployment benefit claimants, compared to a national average of 3.8% and regional average of 4.7%.

Yes,let's go back to wasting money.Take a look about Stoke-on-Trent then take a look at the£ 70million attractive council building which was built for the very important Labour Council.Shameful is the only way to describe what they did to this city.Nothing to do with cuts just wasteful spending.

I would never defend the spending on the new Civic Centre or, frankly, a large amount of what the previous Labour Council did.

However, that does not justify huge cuts to children's services. It also doesn't justify the enormous cuts to Local Authority budgets since 2010.

I'm not sure we ever got away from it?

I think its important to not only focus on Paul Nuttall and Gareth Snell, but also look at what Jack Brereton and the Conservatives stand for, both locally and nationally.

Jack Brereton has done a pretty decent job as the cabinet member for Regeneration, Heritage and Transport. Very forward thinking in some of his ideas and he's been at the forefront with the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone among other schemes.

In order to attract more jobs and more diverse jobs the city needs a higher level of educational attainment and also needs to be attractive enough to retain its graduates and young professionals. Bit of a chicken and egg situation perhaps but it ties up with the studies cited in the Voter Intelligence thread.

There are plenty of intelligent people in the city but there hasn't always been the culture among its inhabitants to go out and get the certificates that prove it.
