Matchday Thread: Port Vale v Chesterfield

The last game of the year, start of a new era or just an episode? Certainly a new man in charge, possible new player, probably a new formation, new manager syndrome in our favour? (Was Horton the last one?} Essential to get 3 points, in what could be a 6 pointer looking on the bleak side as we do. Come on Vale!!!!

Don't think we can get a new player until January.

Win this we could be 9 points clear of the drop, certainly of Chesterfield currently in 21st, lose and we are in deep deep trouble.

Expect us to line up with two up front at least and players in relatively correct positions. It's a must not lose game but we can't give a player of the calibre of Evans the chances Walsall got.

Like to see Purkiss back and Taylor in the midfield with Grant. Kelly out wide and Jones up front. Worry is who would partner Jones as sure Cicilia was injured as the whistle blew for full time diving in to the late chance we had. Pato has gone, Anton is injured and Turner is only a kid so might be struggling to field a two man front line.

May be forced to play Jones up front with a Kelly or Thomas just in behind him.

Taylor should be nothing but a back-up player at this stage of his career. He's far too slow and even his set-pieces have been poor for us. Hopefully Brown will keep things simple, get us more organised and play the sodding players where they are most comfortable.

Alnwick

Purkiss

Smith

Streete

Knops

Thomas

Grant

Kelly

De Freitas

Jones

Cicilia (if available)

If Cicilia is injured then bring Amoros into the 11 and play Kelly in a free role behind Jones.

5 3 2 with wingbacks and a big man-little man combination up front. Don't think it is rocket science but convinced this would be better than the dire set up we've endured recently.

I definitely think this system suits the players we have. We are a bit soft through the middle of the park and off set pieces at the moment, so I think this will help shore things up. Thought Taylor was poor yesterday, hence I wouldn't be too unhappy if Purkiss came back in with surely a point to prove. Similarly Thomas was largely anonymous yesterday though probably isn't fit and I thought Kelly added a little bit of spark when he came on. I had high hopes for De Freitas but again, he didn't do anything worthy of note yesterday.

I am excited to see what the foreign lads can do in a proper formation.

They've all shown glimpses of talent but struggled in a baffling system.

This could be the making of some of these players getting down to basics and not confusing them with zonal marking. Bruno going should give everyone around the club a lift so it's time to get behind Browny and the boys, I'd love him grab his chance with both hands and get the players wanting to give everything for him. First job for him is pick a permanent captain.
