Carol Interview

MBE

Recommended Posts

Regardless of whether getting rid of Clarke was right or wrong it really concerns me that they are not thinking about managers until the season end. Surely they should be reviewing cv's, making shortlists, getting references and interviewing.
It looks like they will go with Crosby but if they don't or he doesn't want the job the last thing we want is to be in limbo. Managers already at clubs will be on holiday delaying the appointment process. We need to be ahead of the game this summer not lagiing behind like last year. Players are not going to commit to a contract with a club that doesn't have a manager in place.

Well I know what I would do if I was Carol…. Never try and communicate with the fans. you all I’ve put 5m in, put a structure in place to rebuild the club which led to a promotion. You’re watching L1 football for the 1st time 5 years. I sacked a manager because we were heading for relegation.2 wins in 18. More red cards than wins.  You wanted communication, I give you as much information as possible to protect confidentiality for all parties and all you can do is slag me off and complain. Next time I will just do what I want with my money and be radio silent.
Well you all ungrateful twats.  I will find another fool to buy the club who doesn’t give a about the club or community . Maybe I will want the club or I will stop putting my 1m a year then you can moan all you want I don’t give .
Vale fans are a different bred. You don’t deserve Carol.

The thing I took from the interview was that the reasoning given was poor performances and lack of discipline. She argues (rightly) that those two are the manager's responsibility.

However, there was no recognition of the problems a poor January window brought - and presumably that was because that's not the manager's responsibility but rather that of the DoF!

For me, we had a window where we clearly needed forward replacements as soon as the window opened (not bringing in an injured forward on the final day) and where if we lost a seasoned left-footed defender we shouldn't be replacing him with a rookie teenager on loan. Neither of those things were the manager's responsibility but arguably weakened his hand as second-half of the season he had a side which didn't threaten to score (until some forwards were fit) and which was leakier at the back. With a side weakened upfront and at the back is it any wonder our performances dipped?

Rob, Agree with what your saying in the last two paragraphs viz the transfer window etc.

However, Carol does say the objective for the club this season is to remain in League 1. However, with 4 games to go it's unknown if that objective will be met or not. Hence I still can't rationalize (based on this main objective) the sacking with 4 games to go when 1 point and certainly one win would most likely see the Vale safe this season, if we're not safe already.

If at the end of the season Vale are relegated, then the reasons why need to be investigated and the  people involved in the football side of the business held accountable with any sacking a logical and justifiable action based on the objective.

I have no idea how Port vale FC as a business handle goal setting/review etc but I would have thought staying in Lge 1 would be the No 1 goal for the season with the highest weight, discipline and good performances of lower weight but still important. Even recent games where the performances haven't been as good have been exciting and nail biting even if the results haven't gone our way. Butterworth's and Benning's goal's, particularly the former, were "Hit the ceiling" jobs.

With Carol having built a largish business I would have thought she would be aware of "goal setting" and it's ramifications etc and she would have  used similar, simple  logic to the above in making any decision about DC. I have no idea what role Flitcroft played in the DC (and Garelick) exits.

I'm no big fan of DC, he removed my two favorite players in Tom Pope and Jake Taylor and I wasn't a fan of the constant use of 3-5-2, but there is no question that he played a major part in bringing success to Vale and at the end of the day that's what counts to a Vale fan.

If I remember right, Carol was talking to their chairman regarding the new hospitality suite he has built there, also one of the first club owners to reach out after the Shanahans became our owners

The whole interview was full of waffle and clichés, but I thought this was an absolute disgrace. It has nothing to do with Port Vale's legacy and I'll be disgusted if we try and glorify such a tragic event.

Darrell was not expected to gain promotion last season with this team and has now been sacked because the team isn't good enough for League 1?

We apparently did too much in the summer window? We started with a 17 year old midfielder up front and have had one actual left back and right back all season.

January wasn't a disaster, we only lost Connor Hall and brought a few in...

I can really see us back to under 5k season tickets and gates next season. The honeymoon is well and truly over.

I dont know what it is with owners but they seem to start with good intentions and then suddenly it all seems to turn to disaster once they have settled in.

I am concerned that it seems to be Crosby's job already, there are plenty of managers out there who would apply but to me it is reading like the money is running dry(if the last 2 windows have been poor what will the next one be like), I like Crosby but it's obvious he wont cost and he has probably said he is happy to work with DF and allow him to bring the players in.

I have to be honest I never thought i would get back to having to worry about the direction the club is heading in again.

We all thank Carol for rescuing the club and for what she has done for us but we cant keep using that if things aren't going well, she really needs to seek investment if the funds are running dry(we cannot stagnate). I just hope she hasn't blocked out the investment idea because she is used to the idea of it just being a family run business.

I hate having a dig at Carol BUT as Mellor said the honeymoon period is certainly over now and the pressure is starting to build
