Match Thread: Wycombe Wanderers v Port Vale

On a sidenote, Harrison doesn't half miss some sitters with his head. But he keeps getting in great positions which is due to his own movement so you can't be too hard on him. But he really could and should have two or three more goals than he does right now, which would also probably give us an extra few points in the league table. I'll take where we are but we could easily be sitting 7th or 8th.

Not impressed by Ainsworth's comments after the game. He said we were big and strong, fighting four our lives to stay in the league and that we're basically a route one team. Out of the two sides on display last night I thought we were the better footballing team by a distance at times when we did get the ball down. Harrison is great in the air so it would be silly not to use that sometimes. It's no worse than them having that big lump Vokes up front, and Harrison is far more mobile and atheltic than him.
I thought it was a strange comment to make as well (that we were fighting to stay in the division) given we're above them in the top half of the table. Came across as quite condescending and arrogant. I also agree that he seemed to see a completely different game to the rest of us. Still a club legend in my eyes though.

Ahh so the person to blame for us not being higher up the league is *checks notes* our top scorer!

couldn’t make it up honestly

I have read the comment on fighting to stay in the league but havent heard it for the context of how it was said, our initial and still main aim is to stay in the league which is correct rather than we are struggling and fighting for our lives, obviously if in 10 games or so we still in position we are now then our aims will evolve of course.

We were fairly route one at times (as were they), we were passing from Stevens to Hall who would launch it downfield, but were good footballing wise in the final third.

Seems like everyone has Captain Tom as the the scorer of our 2nd goal with some saying via a deflection.  Sat behind the goal I honestly thought Mipo had had the last touch/was the ‘deflector’ and at the time was surprised he ran ran over to celebrate with TC as though he hadn’t touched it - very unlike the behaviour of striker. Anyone  else there have a similar view?  Guess if there’s the BLINK behind the goal footage that might confirm one way or the other.

It came off Obita's shoulder.

Off the Wycombe forum

I thought their number 27 Robinson was the best player on the pitch tonight.

Oh for a full back / wing back who can deliver crosses like his.

Really good spot. Was very good, particularly in the first half.

Super quick, tidy on the ball and absolutely tore Obita a new one at one point. Definitely one to keep an eye on for future reference

And definitely one to tie down to a long-term contract as soon as possible.

I think Wycombe and Lincoln are similar. They are prepared to take / keep older players who have played at a higher level and have now dropped down to L1. They bring knowledge and experience. But ultimately there isn't a future in it apart from staying pretty static where they are and maybe out of trouble at the bottom. That's a bit unfair of me - football is a tough sport at all levels and everyone has to find a way. However, surely we are getting better and may be able to develop into a promotion challenger.

Marks from.my bedroom.as I watched game before work .
Stevens 6 first goal I'd have see it again second goal great technique from wing other than that not a save make none what I recall anyway
Smith 8 is Vokes being seen yet or his he still in Smith's pocket.
Cass 7.3 got the ball ran forwards like a mad man thought he was excellent.
Hall 7.1 like Hall cannot remember him doing wrong as such solid good display
Robinson 7.4 some of them balls in deserved be buried the fact we didn't was beyond me it was easier score on one in first half for Harrison unless he was held back .
Benning 7.2 very good again .
Conlon 8.5 best player on the pitch he was involved in everything .
Well played
Pett 7.4 on players like a flash he truly knits our team together .
Harrison 7.2 another game where I'm.scratching my head wondering how he hasn't scored but he is a fine player in our team .
Massey 7.1 thought he was good if he gets his effort on target he scores first half .
Wilson 7.2 fine finish was a constant menace to there defence .
Subs Butterworth same position as sat but this time drags his shot wide after fantastic play from Conlon and the team .
Super go for it play from bench
Mipo always a good shift from this kid .
UTV
Should have won was Harrison pulled back for that header should they have had a pen last echelons of the 90
Gareth Ainsworth Vale legend but is judgement wrong all the intricate what led to chance football was from Vale
Shame there 2 hit and hopes went in .As 3 points deserved for the sheer energy Vale put in
UTV

Stevens needed 7 minutes treatment after he emerged from a scrum with the ball near the Port Vale line with a possible broken nose - Radio Stoke assertion.

Think you need to read all of the posts . But you clearly took it quite personally! Some people disappear when we win and come out of the woodwork for a tough away game.

Moaning about tactics , players positions after 10 minutes.

I miss RZ if i am being honest,so much so that I am hoping we lose soon 🙂

If he was in the middle of the goal in the 6 yard box unchallenged than you may have a point but he's usually being manhandled by some 6ft+, 200lb+ central defender as he was last night 'til their No 5 went off.  Even Tom Pope, who was the best header down the Vale for a long time, missed the odd sitter with his head.

The one I remember last night was from Robinson's (?) cross, when the ball arrived at Harrison's head I doubt he had any control over his body or much choice in the direction he was travelling as the challenge from their defender was so strong, it was a testament to the strength of Harrison that he even got his head on it.

Completely agree, if Harrison keeps getting in great positions then he'll keep scoring.
