Is Vale Park ready to play friendlies? The only testing friendly would be a higher league club at home. The game in Spain could be the hardest.

We could play away games, or at neutral venues. We've done games at St George's Park before.

I find it a massive risk. Fleetwood would have played 6 games before we meet.

But we played games after they finished, nearly a month later. Rest is needed, but our players are still fit enough due to the late finish.

New players I agree need a longer pre-season, but many will be training @ their clubs.

The starting XI will be not as "new" as last season, but we have cup games etc to bed them in.

Its a long season, no point being spent on day one.

Anyone left who we could realistically sign?

Feels like slim pickings.

I read that differently… there are loads of players in that list who I have never heard of. Luckily we now have a team looking after the recruitment who I trust to pick the diamonds from the rough.

I don’t think that’s entirely right. We’ve finished the season 3 weeks after everyone else. Players have had to have a 2-3 weeks off doing nothing to let their bodies recover and then they would gradually get into the running with a set program whilst they’re off in preparation for the preseason return date. But because of losing that 3 weeks, players will have been unable to have done much in terms of their own running to build them up to the same fitness level they would normally be at at this stage of a preseason after a normal seasons finish date.

What I’m saying is that we will probably be slightly behind everyone else fitness wise because of the late finish to last season. There’s no real way of getting that time back and it’s a balancing act of trying to play catch up vs looking after the players by not doing too much. You can’t cram that 3 weeks weve lost of preseason in. That’s why we aren’t playing many friendlies. The manager alluded to it after the kidsgrove friendly too.

You all make good points, thank you.

My remaining question is that if playing in the playoffs kept fitness up, why are the other playoff teams all having more pre-season friendlies? Mansfield have 5 for example.

I can just never remember a professional team going into a season with such little match practice. I understand the thinking behind it but also don't think a) it is a necessity b) it is without risk.

Personally im not at all concerned about our preseason , i empathise with others that are , those who tend not to be as positive , if I ever get worried I just close my eyes remembering the Bratt, Smurf days then it all clicks into place
