Match Thread: Port Vale v Grimsby Town

Can I add now that the Sunderland game should have no bearing on any decision for or against Pugh

Just my personal opinion . But the Pizza Kebab Burger trophy is not a yardstick for our progress .

Forest Green away most certainly is

I wouldn't overly get carried away as this is our worst team for as long as I can remember. You really didn't have to play well to beat us though and I think you have far more tougher challenges to co

Worrall creates all 3 goals. Get him off, should be scoring.

Shout out too to Adam Yates. Excellent, sensible summary on the game throughout. Well done lads. We can do it when we apply ourselves.

So who do you want...

Doesn't matter to anyone who I want personally. But I don't think we should be appointing from within yet again. And Pugh winning games against Grimsby and probably a Sunderland reserve side at home won't change my opinion.

Alot of postives 2day I was very dubious however Pugh proved he can

Set a team up
Motivate players
Tactically aware to change a system through a forced injury and have a plan b
Make subs at the correct time

Although Grimsby were poor so were Mansfield last week not winning at home for a long time

I was impressed with the formation 442 which for me the buzz words from pre match comments were Compact and this was done brilliantly with Hurst tucking in

A motivated Pope does make a difference and worked well with Rodney

Overall very pleased hopefully can retain a bit more possession looking forward to the next 2 games which will be key how good Pughey is potentially

Last mention is the technical area which was 1st class very vocal and animated

Hopefully Pugh and Sinclair can get some good players with there contacts

Pleasantly surprised with the overall performance well done lads UTV

It doesn't matter mate but it's a forum for differing opinions.

For the record I would of liked Alexander .

No harm letting us know your choice you are as entitled to it as any of us

I think it’s one game and the result couldn’t have been better. Still too many crosses coming into the box for my liking. If, post “bounce”, we maintain that gap over the danger zone, it’s bought Carol time in selecting a new manager. How far up the table we end up will determine the strength of Pugh’s application if he throws his cap in the ring. It’s one small step.

From what I can read, no one is pushing a contract in front of him just yet.

All people have said is that compared to what we have seen recently today was a good start for him.

New formation, more intensity in the press, adaptive changes of formation, proactive subs not left too late, a clean sheet and 3 goals.

Yes it was the side on 23rd but this is the 3rd time we have played a team in that position this year and we lost the other two.

Is a good start... people are literally saying they need to see how he goes against FGR and beyond.

No one should be offering the job tonight, but equally to write him off immediately seems rash.

5 of the top 6 managers in the league are in there first ever management position.

Watched the game and listened to the commentary today. I felt the knives in John’s back. The team  won today with the injured players back irrespective of who was the manager. Next week will be interesting.

Are they the same knives that you put in LS back?

63% possession means nothing if you don't have an end game.

True enough but in the first half they could've easily been the team 2 nil up.  I'm not complaining after winning a game, 3 points is 3 points at the end of the day, just not convinced that against better teams 442 would be the way to go, we currently don't have good enough players in the engine room in my opinion, and I think the second half bares that out, Grimsby barely having a chance after the change at half time.

It's incredible that 25 grown men, with their own rational faculties, careers, families, aspirations, and fears, could be turned against their boss by Frank Sinclair whispering in their ear behind his back.

Come on, folks. Whatever has gone on in the last few weeks, the conspiracy theories have reached tinfoil hat levels. Sinclair has been painted as some form of Machiavellian supervillian, assiduously flipping players previously in full support of Askey to decide to 'down tools', at detriment to their careers, in order to secure the Interim Assistant Manager job. I'm sure he's a charismatic fella but forgive me for not believing he's that convincing.

I think the dichotomy of last week and previous games is down to a few factors; mostly, that Askey's cycle has come to an end, and his steadfast refusal to deviate from his ideas got a bit... tedious? Combine that with us coming up against poor opposition today, and also having Tom Pope readily supported up top, with a bit of luck sprinkled in.

Fans seem obsessed with concocting exotic reasons for a downturn on form, to the extent that the ancient practice of Yoga has received stick recently, when it probably was more to do with the natural peaks and troughs of football.

I trust that, if there had been serious misbehaviour, it would have been dealt with appropriately. If Sinclair is still at the club, and entrusted with assisting Pugh in this difficult period, I personally doubt he's been turning Askey's men against him, as some suggest. They probably had just had enough. To suggest otherwise, that Sinclair has been involved in workplace malpractice and has seemingly been rewarded for doing so, is a bit of a dig at Carol.

Other than a bit more effort and playing an appalling side, I didn't see too much difference today myself. I honestly believe as bad as things had got under him, we would have won today even if Askey had of been in charge still. If he's given enough time and we suddenly won 4 or 5 of the next 6 games then I'd say Pugh should come into the reckoning, that would only be fair. But in my opinion, if we've had plenty of applications as seems to be the case then we should be looking to make a permanent appointment asap. Whether the next manager is vastly experienced or inexperienced makes no difference on whether he'll be successful or not, neither is a given. But I just struggle to believe that we can't aim higher and do better than Danny Pugh, unless we're skint and simply can't afford the salary of most who are applying.

My opinion is that we should be aiming higher than Danny Pugh right now, and that's obviously despite the win today. If he's still here in a months time and we've gone on a run, then maybe my opinion will have changed somewhat. But today I didn't see much difference at all than previous weeks other than there was a bit more collective effort, as was always going to be the case, and playing an even worse side than some of the tripe that managed to take points off us in previous weeks.

You can only beat what's in front of you and today everybody did their job. We beat a shocking side at home and if we can beat Sunderland, depending on who they decide to play on the night, we can go into a much tougher game against Forest Green with the bit of confidence winning two games on the bounce gives you.

You were genuinely impressed today?

We were bang average. But against such a poor team it was enough.

Not sure what your own thoughts are but I think it's purely circumstances rather than any conspiracy.  It began with not strengthening a team sufficiently. We began the season inconsistently, several players out of form, but got a few decent results.  Fundamentally, we then had a crisis of confidence, beginning with the cup defeat and Tranmere loss, subsequently more "out of character" individual errors crept in.  We then have an avalanche in form, bad results, the manner of those results is important, and a total collapse in confidence.  Things will have gone on behind the scenes but they wouldn't have been the root cause in my book.

This is just my own proposal, I have no idea what happens at the club.
