The Run In

If we play as we did today I can see wins v Yeovil, FGR Macc and the Railway children, any more away points would be a massive bonus, as I can’t see us getting anymore away.

Given the season we’ve had, that would see us in a relatively good final position.

Did you expect 3 points today?

A decent point today, even if the game was uninspiring, just to keep things ticking over. I think that 43-44 points should be sufficient to see us safe so one more win will likely see us over the line. The sooner we get there the happier I will be.

Yeovil’s run in is pretty horrific! Think they will go myself.

3 or 4 points should do it. A win means Notts need 4 wins from 8, Macc 4 from 9 and Yeovil 3 from 8 so as long as 2 of the sides don’t manage that we would be ok!

I said before Notts if we average a point a game to get to 45 points we would be safe, in the four games we’ve averaged 2 a game so we’ve found form at the right time.

Hopefully we see off FGR next week and can be comfortable.

The teams in the bottom 3 are averaging roughly a win every 4 games so 4 wins in 9 would be a major upswing in form. Maybe 1 team could do that but 2-3 teams would be unlikely.

Out of the bottom 3 Macc have been showing the most signs of life so they may well get out of it at the expense of Yeovil. Both Notts and Yeovil looked very poor against us.

Looking at Cambridge’s fixtures they must be sweating a bit. Looking at recent years the points tally to survive ranges from 40-50 ish. To keep the whole shebang firmly in our own hands I’d like 10 more points though fewer might do. It’s important to recouperate this week keep up the pressing game, possibly beat a decent FGR side at this level and if other results go our way we’re another significant step to safety. At this stage our main enemy would be complacency. Points away from home are going to be very hard to come by, maybe something at Northampton, maybe something at Bury if they’re safe in an automatic spot and we still need something but ....need to win the home games.

Goal difference is usually a pretty good proxy for performance and hence league position. The worst in L2 are:

Cambridge -22

Yeovil -18

Macclesfield -24

County -33

These are also the bottom four. GD tells you so much either about a team's inability to score or their propensity to concede. It certainly doesn't beat points but in a tight situation, as we have at the bottom of L2, it may well be the difference between relegation and staying up. Ours is -10, so fingers crossed.

Our GD is almost worth another point. Effectively Macc and Notts need to beat our run in by a clear 9 points (albeit Macc have a game in hand).

With my sensible head on I struggle to see 2 teams who've won 7-8 games all season managing that with 8-9 games to go, however, football is a funny old game so the sooner we are mathematically safe the happier I will be.

As I said previously I think that another 3-4 points will probably be easily enough for safety barring a big change in form for the bottom 3.

Our GD is due to having the best defence away from home... it we’d matched that at home we’d be laughing.

Macc v Cambridge last game of season may decide the fate of one of these 2 teams looking at the fixtures, although Cambridge have Morecambe in the game prior so may be safe.
