The Run In

I steadfastly do not get involved in the debate on our current chairman, it's purely a comment on the general ongoing saga of football finances. When I was young I wanted to live to be older, richer and own Port Vale. In achieving a reasonable degree of two of these I have learnt enough to know that any involvement in the other would have a massive long-term impact on my health and family. Anyone who wants to own a lower league football club is welcome to the headache I just want to watch the football and have a couple of beers. As a objective comment our cycle of administrations is not that dissimilar to a number of other clubs. The Birmingham City saga also seems to be rumbling on.

I'm the same you sound somewhat richer than me but there's no way I'd want to own Vale. for all the reasons you state.

I'm certainly not rich enough to throw tens of millions down a black hole. Enough to do what makes me happy without having to worry too much, which is all you can hope for and is a lot easier when they're not that expensive.

I suspect that somewhere along the line one of the clubs will go because of a points deduction as too many clubs seem to be on the edge in a few of the leagues.

To wit, the general malaise our club finds itself in. Unfortunately our current chairman is like most others, central to the decline of once proud clubs who are/have fallen on lean times, and as you so rightly say anyone who wants to own a lower league club is welcome to the headache.

There's the problem. Because there is such a gulf, both financially and in terms of playing ability, between a successful Championship side and any side in L2 the latter are generally only the preserve of either chancers looking to make a quick buck or the serially deranged. I'll leave you to make up your mind on which one Norman is.

Because the goal of all successful owners is to get their club in the Premiership, where the real money is, no one worth their salt would touch a lower league club except if you're already a fan and have a vested interest.

I agree with much of what you say. But then what does that make SS?

I must admit I’m concerned about the romantic side of their desire to own the club, it’s a lovely thought but then so was v2001. If they really wanted it they should have called out Smurf and offered their full amount upfront, it appears they are incapable of doing so which doesn’t bode well for long term funding. When they do take over how long do they get before the fan base turn on them and vilify them in this short termistic world we live in where the demand for success is always required ‘yesterday’?

Whoever is in charge next season must address the key position at the club, the manager and we need a manager that can galvanise a squad of players to exceed expectation. Had we had one this season we could have been challenging for the play offs given our top ten budget. No more inexperienced league managers, we need to push the boat out and attract one in the mould of Micky with a history of some success.

A quick update to get us back on topic.

A tough day today. We started brightly but seemed to run out of steam in the 2nd half.

Results elsewhere were largely positive with the teams around us picking up a win at best. Notts managed to lose without Exeter having a shot on target, according to the BBC.

Shame we couldn't hold out for at least a point but still feeling reasonably comfortable. Now off to read about the possibility of admin.

They offered £3.5 million . That’s more than romantic. SS employs 350 people. I should think they know how to run a business properly, unlike the blue one.

Awesome result today, which will help us sleep a little easier tonight. I think that we are all but safe barring some sort of miraculous turn of form from the teams below us (and there are more of them tonight).

I had feared the worst when we were a goal and a man down with Notts winning but the 2nd half performance was something else, especially with 10 men.

Guest TommyMac
I'll be surprised if we get more than 3 points from those remaining games. A point from each of Yeovil, Stevenage and Macc.

I'm so happy and relieved to be eating humble pie tonight. Congratulations to the players and especially John Askey
