Players in and out

Rampant Zebra

Worrell, Hannatt, Angus, Daniels, Monty and Kanu can all play on the wing. When Barnett leaves we haven't got target man cover for Pope. Toure played on the wing at Macc but he's really a centreforward. There probably isn't much money left in the budget so he may well be a reasonable short-term gamble if someone has seen him play and he does ok.

Even out of those I think we're taking a gamble on Kanu, Angus & Daniels playing on the wing too. I hope they can all come good. For me Worrall is the first choice right winger. From then its who we play on the left and who we have to call on if Worralls out or we are looking to change things up a bit.

If Monty plays on the wing, which I don't think he will, who plays left back as we don't have one?

You've also got Dodds who can play in both positions. The bottom line is the manager has signed them so he has to believe they can do a job. If they can't he'll get the sack - ex legend or not. There is cover at fullback if the manager wants to play Monty as a winger because Pugh, Rawlinson and Vassell have played their.

Aspin also played a lot with wingbacks, particularly at Gateshead. Vassell was allegedly good under Aspin with a back 3 and less good when he left and they reverted to a back 4. My hunch is that's where he's probably heading.

Certainly knows where the goal is!!! 196 in 453 games - almost 1 every other game. At 36, he could do us 2 seasons, while we're waiting for the younger lads to develop properly, without so much pressure. Also, could you imagine defences coping with The Pontiff and The Beast???

The beast knocking them out of the way and the Pope running through the carnage to score. A nice dream, but can't see the move happening.

It always struck me that the main reason Hannant played left midfield instead of centre was to release Monty to go forward knowing that he would be covered.

So we don't have a left winger, but those two do the same job as a conventional winger and full back, but in a different way.

We've got a squad of 27 so far. 3 of those are transfer listed and its a fair chance they won't come back in to the fold again. Turner is out on loan and I wouldn't be surprised to see Benns and Calveley go out on loan too. So that leaves us with a pool of 21 players to pick from. Not quite enough. Aspin spoke ot having a squad of around 25 to work with.

GK

Brown

Hornby

Defence

Gibbons

Vassall

Legge

Rawlinson

Smith

Montano

Midfield

Worrall

Hannant

Pugh

Tonge

Kay

Joyce

Oyeleke

Daniels

Calverley

Forward

Pope

Miller

Dodds

Kanu

Angus

Benns

Transfer Listed

Lainton

Davis

Barnett

Out on Loan

Turner

I would have thought the 25 would include kids who may go out on loan but fair enough.

Looking at that we need some more defenders and a third choice keeper. We have as many strikers as we have defenders and will only play with half the ammount of strikers at any given time.

Looks like we have a Northern Irish full back named Rory McKeown on trial, too.

Looking at his career hes dropped out of the Scottish leagues to play English non-league. But we do probably need a dedicated left back.

He has made it in to the full Northern Ireland squad a couple of times under O'Neil. I think he probably made a mistake a couple of years ago turning down a contract in Scotland because he wanted to play in England. Would have been better getting a contract first rather than just expecting to come down and get a couple of trials and be picked up. At 26 he's pretty much in the last chance saloon.

Which could work in out favour meaning we get him for cheap, like we did with Gunning.
