Shame that one as Montano isn't the answer there

I'm not sure Denton was the answer either when played as a left midfielder / left winger. However him being in the squad gave us the option of going with wing backs with him and Gibbons. Who could do that role now out of the current squad?

Totally agree. I can think of two crosses he's made for goals, two more than Month

Maybe a chance to play the young Sheffield united lad, or change it round a bit, or hopefully Aspo and JR have plans.

Slightly sad but not surprised by Denton's return. Inexplicably underused and subbed on a regular basis. In the games I've seen he's had far more impact than say Montano, who apart from 10 minutes against Coventry effectively leaves us playing with 10 men. Can't see Montano lasting much longer if he continues to play as if he's allergic to being touched by another player.

Denton looked good in the wing back role and he offered a lot of energy but I agree he was caught out at times at left back. We have Kelly and whilst he hasn't played much, did earn a lot of praise whilst on loan (lower down the football pyramid) and gives us a chance to develop our own player. Aspin needed to reduce the playing squad and he is taking steps to do that and working within the current players to cover other positions i.e. Pugh at left back, Kay defensive midfield.

I think Denton did well and gave his all when he played, he didn't shy away. Unfortunate that Stobbs and Pyke were unable to force their way into the team but good luck to them all. Hopefully they will have good things to say about the club to other players, despite them not getting the game time they would have liked.

I'm a bit surprised by this too because he was an effective option as left wing back/left midfield. Maybe it's part of the drive to reduce the unsustainable squad size we have and/or Aspo is looking for players that can defend as well as attack.

I think Montano is a talented and promising player but he has a lot to learn if he is to fulfill his potential. For one thing, Aspo is not going to put up with anything less than 100% work rate and Montano will learn this to his cost if he doesn't put a shift in on a regular basis.

Looking forward to seeing the Aspo/Rudge masterplan unfold over the coming weeks and months

When Aspo first came he subbed Denton a couple of times after 45 mins i seem to recall. Morecambe he definitely did. Seemed ok performance to me but Aspo knows more than me !!

Has had a few nice cameo roles lately, setting up the goal at Colchester.

If it is for personal reasons fair enough.

As well as Pugh has done recently we are now crying out for a left back with Denton and Gunning gone and of course Yates injured.

Is Aspo likely to trust Kelly yet, he may surprise us as he has recently made the squad.

Whatever the outcome i now TRUST our manager whereas pre-October it was names in a hat job.

Also for what it is worth Montano can offer something and is better than we have seen, i hope for a good second half of the season from him.

To give you a an idea about how scouting works nowadays;

Two years ago, I coached the son of the chief scout of FC Midtjylland here in Denmark. So I asked him, how on earth they found a striker in Hungary or a winger in Lithuania. So he told me, 90% was done by computer. They have 2 programmes they use. One called Wyscout (where Vale is on as well), and one I can't remember the name of. So they entered data on the type they were looking for ie. good headgame, left footed, good crosses and put in Europe as target. So the computer game them clips on perhaps 100 players. Then they narrowed and narrowed the searches, until they end up with 3 to 5 players. And first then, they actually travel to watch those players.

So I would believe, that is the same way UK clubs are scouting these days.

I know for a fact Vale are on Wyscout, and so are almost every other UK club. So when we get offered a U21 player from Leeds, go on Wyscout, search his name, and I guarantee you, there are 50 clips of him on there!

Sorry to say, but that's the way it works these days... And that's why Rudge never sees other managers at game, he is an oldschool gem!

Midtylland are a very interesting example due to their 'moneyball' approach utilised by Matthew Benham, their owner and owner of Brentford.

Relative to their income, wage expenditure etc both Brentford and Midtjylland vastly outperform the others in their division.

Statistics in football (with things like xG) seem to be becoming more and more popular, and with the new Barnsley takeover featuring the man behind Moneyball, Billy Beane, it will be interesting to see what approach we take this January and in the summer, as finding, scouting, and signing players has vastly changed since Rudge's days.

Brentford has a very strong Danish influence. Besides Benham owning both clubs, and the 2 players performing in the first team (Bjelland and Vibe, Bjelland most likely going to the WC), they have 3 other Danes in the first team squad, including a striker they just bought, Emiliano Marcondes, who is considered one of the biggest talents in Denmark of his age group. He scored 17 goals in 19 games, in the Danish Premier in the fall. As well as 5 or 6 Danish youth players, a Danish ass. manager (Thomas Frank) and a Danish youth development coach (Lars Friis). As well as a Danish CEO (Rasmus Ankersen). So they seem to be very very happy about danes at the Bees

Shame about Denton he looked good in some of his 2nd half cameos and set up 3 or 4 goals I can think of at least with crosses.(against Yeovil twice for Pope and Colchester for Harness). He could certainly cross a ball and had good energy and skill as a left wing back/winger. Wasn't quite so effective from the start when he played though and wasn't so good defensively. I think fitness was perhaps a problem too?

Good luck to the lad he certainly tried his best hope he has a good career.
