He was actually poor and Adams dropped him completely from the squad, came back into the side for the last few games and steadied the ship but overall hardly set the world alight for us.

You talking about the same player?

He was quality and played 17 of the 20 games he was here for, winning man of the match in a fair number of them. I remember him playing at the back virtually on his own one game, outstanding.

My recollection was that he was good when he first came into the team at Gillingham but that his performances deteriorated in the last few weeks of the season when he started to look lie an old age pensioner and his legs had clearly gone.

But we got a very good couple of months out of him and he steadied the ship for a time.

I don't think anyone on here wanted to keep him beyond the end of the season.

That's how I remember him too, TheSage. His performance at home to Southend when Assambalonga made him look very silly was almost comically bad. That said, he was fantastic in a huge win at Gills as you say.

I'd like us to sign a tall, dominant centre half who is 6/3 or 6/4.

The ball is in the air more than it's on the ground in this league.

Talking of Peter Kay, wasn't Tommy Cooper a big fella?

6ft 5ins , with the fez 7ft 1ins:yes:

He was good against the right type of centre forward and pretty poor against cleverer or quicker opponents. I wasn't that convinced he was better than what we had overall. He was what he was, big strong, brave and very slow. Not sure he was a particularly intelligent footballer. You could see why he could play alongside a better reader of the game at a higher level when he was younger.

If it is Anthony Kay, it's not so much his age we should be worried about (he's 34) but his height. At 5ft 11, he and Smith or Davis would probably be the smallest centre-back pairing in L2. Listed by Wiki as a defender/midfielder, so perhaps Brown, if he's signed him, will be looking at him for defensive mid or full back. All speculation!

I thought Purse did what was asked of him by in large an experienced pro to guide us over the finish line. Of course past his best in some games but a good contribution generally. Cracking header at Chesterfield as well!

He was certainly far from poor overall at least in my opinion.

Kay has always been a steady eddie player wherever he's been, obviously a good pro to have made that many appearance generally at League One level. I seem to remember us being linked with him a few years back maybe around Foyle's time as manager(might be wrong?) but he went somewhere else. He should have a year or so left in him 4th division level surely?
