Charlton (H) match thread - 6th Jan

14th in the league. Not a bad season so far. What's everyone's expectations? We're a small team in league one.

Call me cynical but is this the massey who decides to play when he needs a contract extension?

Why would he not perform and then risk being dropped/ moved on - possibly ending up on lower wages? Why would any player for that matter play below their capabilities in front of thousands of people? Isn't it more likely he drifts in and out of form like most players?

It’s the old thing. If players are consistently playing at their best they’d be in the PL not Lg 1

We haven’t got one player when even playing at their best would be a first team PL player.

Wilson would if he had  legs that worked

I wonder whether Crosby might be overplaying that 'Garrity has a long term injury'.

He could well be out for a bit, but saying it's long term might put off some potential bids from teams.

I should think his agent will know exactly what the situation is.

Nothing to explain you described the spiral effect.

Knowing the Cheltenham manager I think the fans are right behind him as the team is having a right good go. The Carlisle fans a right behind Simpson after the promotion last season and have trust in him.

It’s going to take some turn around for Crosby to get that turnaround although the last couple of home performances have been much better with that change in style, I personally like the prickly post match today from him rather than robotic generic responses.

The Carlisle fans aren’t actually right behind Simpson.  There’s a percentage who feel he’s the right man for the job and understand they (currently) have a weak squad which they hope to strengthen with the foreign money they now have, some who despite having reservations think he deserves some loyalty after gaining promotion last season, others want him gone, others only want to keep him as they see him as the best option for next season in League 2.  So it’s a mixed bag.  Their support for their club is decent though.

Got to say that performance today put me through all the emotions that I thought I had lost.

He missed from a yard today first half. But maybe.

I honestly cannot ever be convinced about Gavin Massey.

People wanting him to get MOM today?

Have a word.

Did anyone see his pathetic chip towards their player, when we should have been on a counter, which resulted in their 3rd?

He was the architect of that! It’s a giff job he passed one in the net to make up for it because their keeper was garbage.

Vale are garbage. The over coaching is why Alfie didn’t clear his lines for their 2nd.
Andy Crosby is getting away with murder. So many papering of the cracks.

Cheltenham will finish above us. Mark my words. And on game number 46 this season we will have either been relegated or it will be on the last day.

You happy clappers have been warned.

Massey scored a good goal and made another by drawing a penalty. We have given two goals away and he's culpable in one.

I was pleased that we played football on the deck today. We had 29 shots with 12 on target. Their keeper has made a number of good saves. At our level which is L1 we were definitely effective in attack. 3 goals and many good attempts, one bad miss close in when we should have scored second half. One barking refereeing decision when we had a clear breakaway opportunity at the end.

In my opinion two of the goals against came from trying to play out. I am frustrated by them, we could have lost this game etc. But overall we played out quite well. Debra is good on the ball. You could see that from the Lorne Street and we do lose quite a lot going forward when he isn't there to link with Massey. But he didn't look fit and shouldn't have started. I'm concerned he may have played when pushed to do so or volunteered to play when he shouldn't have done so.

It's open play where our defence was alarmingly bad today. It wasn't helped by the linesman getting offside calls wrong throughout the second half. I thought we just got played through and only last ditch defending kept the score down. I know that was a makeshift team today, but we can all see it's defence that needs to improve fast. If we sort this out we can climb to mid table. If we don't we will keep being a side that has games like this where we have been good going forward but can't outscore the opposition.

I'm not as pessimistic as you, but we need action to improve the defending. That likely means signing someone and also hoping Debrah isn't bust for 2 months because he is by far our best central defender.
