Match Thread: Port Vale v Accrington Stanley

I'd go with
Stevens
Cass Smith Jones
Worrall Benning
Pett Ojo
Garrity
Proctor Politic
We need start Proctor
No offense to Massey but yes team wise he did his job well again on sat but he had no goal attempts .
Not a game for young Donnelly maybe away games where less pressure for the foreseeable future for him .
Need to stop giving teams goals every home game it's our mistakes not good play what is costing us goals.
In Cup v these we could easily have been 3 down with poor defensive play before we went on to win 5-1 .
Coleman a quality manager and its going be anything but easy .
The crowds going be low for sure people collectively will react badly to manner of defeat v Wycombe because till Smith's pass and horrific play there after we really should have netted before them different game then if Politic had headed in and Benning had drove home it had of been a very different outcome the fact they both missed was so damn disheartening and then the customary leg up from a player whos asset is to stop then it all went to pot .

Regarding the criticism of the defence, we arent that bad without the few thumpings. We are about how we should be. Goals scored we are 6th lowest. So if Smith makes a mistake its a disaster, but for the forwards to not perform we cut them slack? Team game and moving up a league has shown how important the defence is. Forward wise we are lacking, even DW has to play far deeper.

Hopefullly we will get the players in, we need to hold the ball more, but even Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea wont win all there games. Look at Juve , AC Milan, who lost to Inter yesterday their form is DDLLL, it happens. They had no shots on target.

We are not "little Port Vale", we just have to be able to compete, just like any other football club. Take the good times with the bad and be proud to support the club you chose.

Shrewsbury away sold out.

I will moan if I feel the need, but that is more disappointment than anger.

Hopefully the players feel the same.

As I said we have to look at the devil in the detail on the defeats when the emotion has simmered.

Last 6 games

0-2 V Sheffield Wednesday Away - They are about 20 unbeaten I believe and on a run of 6-7 straight wins, top of the league, no shame there.

3-1 v FGR Away - Got the win on paper we would expect.

0-2 v Peterborough Home - Championship side last season, injury hit Vale side.

1-2 V Derby Home - Another side on a run since October and 6-7 straight wins now, including hammering a couple of teams, we were minutes from a famous win despite no strikers at all. Would have been mid table Championship last season without deductions.

0-0 V Cheltenham Away - Dominant side but without strikers couldn't get the breakthrough, performance decent.

0-3 V Wycombe Home - Play Off finalists, still no strikers and they had enough points (83) to have got promoted in many previous seasons (5 more than we did in L2) so clearly a decent outfit who are very "Professional" in how they see out games.

Before the season you say we got 4 points from those 6 its probably about what we would expect even with a fully fit squad playing two giants, the PO finalists and a Championship side last season.

Granted performances are not overly great but we will have easier tests to come and they are the bread and butter ones, we've played all these twice now anyway!

Can see a really low crowd for this one. A couple of wins no matter how they come can some change things again, but at the moment everything seems to be on a downward slide and it's hard to see where a win is coming from with such a tootheless attack and no creatity whatsoever in the middle of the park. If Garrity starts in midfield again and Massey as our main guy up top, Clarke needs to be asked one or two serious questions.

Why would we take the thumpings off though? They count just as much as a clean sheet does.

We shouldn't accept it but we have no given right to beat these teams and they are quality sides, its a different ball game to losing 2-0 at home to the likes of Barrow or Grimsby for example. Critical now is to get the 50 point mark up, currently relegation form of 1 point a game comfortably does it then we look at the situation in the summer in terms of financially what we can afford to do.

Proc must be due 60 mins this time, so he should start.

Can see the team sheet now.  Proc - Bench.  Starting the match with Pol, Massey, Butters.

Brings Proc on with 20mins to go.

Hopefully Proc will start the match.  Even if only 45 minutes, we may see a Vale goal and can build on that.

Think the crowds will be low tomorrow night as fans wont go to watch a side lacking attacking players capable to scoring.

Time to get back to basics, and just get certain players doing what they are good at and no more, so Smith should be in the middle of the back three, Garrity higher up the pitch, I’d also have experienced players starting like Pett, Proctor etc,, if we have to take them off as the game goes on then so be it. We need to start quickly on the front foot with a high tempo, cut out all this slow pointless possession with the keeper & centre backs which keeps costing us when they miss place a simple pass. We also need to be much better from attacking throw ins, free kicks and corners as these have been awful lately. After we have done all this we then just need to hope somebody shows some composure in front of goal!
Team for me would be
Stevens
Cass / Smith / Jones
Worrall / Pett / OJo / Benning
Garrity / Proctor / Massey or Politic

The throw in where we are in the opposition half and throw it back into ours to pass it back to the keeper is so annoying !

I think this was always going to be one of the lowest crowds of the season either way but recent home form won't help.

The attendance might not be as low as we're all thinking as a lot of people like myself will have already purchased tickets for the game as it was obviously postponed.

It will be a lot lower for sure, but hopefully not as bad as we're all thinking.

Yeah I reckon 5500-6000 still.

I'm less bothered by the size of the crowd, more the attitude.

If we are in a "slump" (and we've hardly lost 10 in a row or anything) then it's the first in two years of non-stop success and improvement under Darrell Clarke.

For God's sake lay off the players, and if you really feel the need to boo do it after the final whistle.
