Re Joey Barton - just read a story about why he left Fleetwood.

"It has been claimed that dressing room discord followed an attempt by Barton to impose fines on Fleetwood players for wearing gloves - only for the players to produce photos of Barton wearing the same garments during his playing days."

Would be pretty remarkable if he left the club for trying to crack down on gloves considering they stood by him after he chinned an opposition manager and was arrested and sent to trial for it.

Looking for our 6th Manager in less than 5 years.

23 months ago most posters on here were saying that the club needs stability.

Now it's a finger in the air job again.

Askey did a good job at Vale and approx 2 months ago we were comfortably in the play offs.

Then the bubble bursts big style. A batch of key player injuries, senior players sent off, Covid, conceding late goals, a left field coaching appointment

Whatever, it has all added up to ditching over 20 months of steady progress by the Management team and putting us back to where we were before Askey was appointed.

What a shame this wasn't all nipped in the bud.

Someone has let Carol down whilst her attention had been deflected from her primary responsibility.

I am not convinced it was Askey.

You’re right, but I think Barton as a manager is finished. How can he command respect with his antics while a manager? Imagine Legge gets sent off...what could Barton say without being a total hypocrite?

He had 1 job at Fleetwood because he was golfing buddies with the owner. Can you really see him getting along with Carol and the whole cuddly, family values, community sandwich delivery ethos of the club? I can’t.

Some fairly serious accusations there, Dave.

Not only do you seem to suggest Carol has acted in a rash manner and not considered this decision very, very carefully and acted in the best interests of Port Vale, but you also seem to suggest someone else in the club has undermined Askey.

Askey did do a good job, but the cold hard facts are that we are currently in no better league position than we were when he arrived, with a much older squad and a litany of poor transfer decisions leaving us lumbered with inadequate players with contracts to run. To argue that this sacking has set us back, and not Askey's mismanagement/recruitment, is circling the issue. We're in this bad position because Askey underperformed after superb backing, not because Carol watched the capitulation on Saturday and knew she had to act.

Stability for stability's sake is not the best move; stability with a good manager is preferable. I have confidence in Port Vale, and confidence in Carol, to appoint a manager who can extract more from these players than Askey did this season. You seem to be putting more blame on Carol for having her 'eye off the ball' than you do for the manager who wasted her money in a pandemic on Whitehead, McKirdy, Robinson, and Mills.

I back Carol on this one.

Askey would have taken us down. Carol has made the correct decision. I’m convinced she will get the next appointment right.

While Carol and Kevin are the owners, it would be a folly to suggest they will succeed as a “one man band”. Smurfwaite appeared to have nothing else to do, even serving drinks in the sales kiosks (even in the Lorne Street until a public lynching was on the cards).

Our current owners, solid as they have been in making the right call to get rid of Askey, cannot run a club on their own when they have the demands of Synetics and most meetings will likely be taking place over Zoom etc.

We need to look beyond them for the problems. The board looks light on actual knowledge of running football clubs and our scouting network is dire, a sad hangover from Smurfwaite cost cutting.

If he was happy feeding the squad old pies, I dread to think what else got culled.

Can't understand why the club community efforts keep getting mentioned by fans. It's not a weakness, it's a strength, and the right thing to do. Our present owners will attract managers to apply because they are solid sensible business people.  And Joey Barton shouldn't be allowed near the Vale for reasons beyond our being "cuddly family values" - he's a thug, as his record shows.  Can dish it, but doesn't like taking it, and players soon see through that.

Not accusing Carol of anything other than she was recently quoted as saying she needed to re-focus on the primary role.

She has acted by sacking the Manager. That is her decision and one that probably took a lot of heart searching. Hopefully it all works out great.

So definitely not criticising our superb owner.

My thoughts are simply that Askey is a very experienced Manager and a good Manager doesn't become s bad one overnight. A couple of months is not overnight, but something has gone on to change a team from a closely bonded one, to one in complete disarray.

Any road up a new Manager it is and I personally would still go for Rob Page because he turned us into s footballing possession side rather than Mickey's more direct style.
Additionally he was Mickey's recommendation to Smurthwsite wasn't he?

The fact he kept us in a good position in league 1 whilst having to put up with Smurthwaite's antics. Jealousy and eventual hatred has to be congratulated. He refused to defer to Smurthwsite throughout his time at the club probably knowing it could only end up with him leaving.

His subsequent coaching with Wales has a similar feel to the guy currently doing so well at our near neighbours.

I have always thought the number who criticised Page has been overblown in retrospect.

He had critics, yes, but I think most were at least moderately satisfied with him? There will always be a few who dissent, but by and large I recall Page being at least tolerated by some fans. His departure to Northampton came as a shock to the vast majority.

I quite liked him; articulate, understood the game, a great eye for a transfer. Would have loved to see him under a better owner. He's onto bigger and better things now.

Not sure I would say he is an experienced manager tbf. He was replaced at Macc in his first spell after only 1 win in 13. Then returned for a second spell where he completed his only real noteable achievement in getting Macc promoted against all odds. Deservedly got his chance at Shrewsbury and won 5 from 21. Was excellent for us keeping us in the league. And, for me, hugely over achieved last season. But this season never got going. He has been around football his whole life but that doesn’t automatically mean he is experienced.

Sorry for him, genuinely wanted the bloke to do well but ultimately he along with the players have not delivered this season from the off. Non of them deserve to be in the employment of pvfc at present especially given the way we have looked after during the pandemic. But sadly you can’t sack all of them so 1 man has to be made culpable.

This next appointment is crucial to showing what ambition there is around the club to do well. We have scrimped on managers for years and it’s only taken us one way. The one time in recent history we got anyone in of any calibre and we got promoted.

I agree he deserved a better owner Joe.

He certainly didn't allow Smurthwaite to bully him.

Because he couldn't dominate him mentally it seems Smurthwaite forced him out via the 50% budget cut.

Any road up as you say he had gone in to bigger and better things.

Carol probably wants a Manager who will buy into her ethos which many experienced Managers on the Merry go Round wouldn't understand if it hit them in the face, as they are all about what's in it for themselves and themselves only! So if they are a success would Vale be just a stepping stone in their minds?

I'd never criticise Aspo for his time as manager - it seems he had to deal with the worst of Scumtwat's excesses / ideas / pettiness / vindictiveness, and, although I've always considered Aspo a fighter, by the time he went, he just looked a weary, beaten man...and we don't really know how bad Scummy's meddling was?

Sorry? I texted my mate Steve who’s a diehard fan and he told me his opinion based on following them for 50 odd years. No MB involved.
