I’m delighted to hear that young Reece Robins has got himself an opportunity to sign at Port Vale. The young man came in and was training in my academy at 14 years of age and I decided to put him into men’s football at the age of 15. He trained with us in the promotion season last year and the young man just goes from strength to strength and I think playing with men has accelerated his development, but the boy’s attitude and willingness to learn and his endeavour to do well has been an absolute credit to himself and his parents, and he gets an opportunity now at Port Vale that he very much deserves and has been earned on merit. It’s been a tough journey for him but the hard work starts now to get himself in a position where he’ll be playing for their first team. We have a very close relationship, I’ve overseen his development now for a long time and I’m absolutely delighted to be able to say that he’s signing for Port Vale.

Only 16 so assume he will be more a case of going into the youth set up?

I understand Smurthwaite watched him through binoculars from an 8th-floor flat on Hamil Rd. He saw enough to convince him he's got what it takes. The chairman couldn't be at the game for fear or fan attacks, racism, protests and persecution.
