Matchday Thread: Chesterfield v Port Vale

I'd like to see us play with some sort of pattern. There's no plan to our build up play at the minute, other than go long to Pope and hope it sticks or we win the loose ball.

Do we think 3-5-2 could work with Smith/Kay/Gunning at the back,Denton looks like he could easily play wing back(not sure Wilson can though)maybe Whitfield could

I think it would work.3-5-2 is an attacking formation.Play to feet not to head.Last Saturday was ugly.

I thought Denton looked likely to be a competent wing back or could play wing outright. He showed some good ball skills in the first half when I was able to observe him close up. Wilson looked exposed at right back in the first half, but to be fair a lot of fullbacks have in the past because the pitch is wide and especially if the wing / midfield don't track back. My judgement on him is out, but he may be a better midfield player than fullback.

It may be that we would have handled Akinfenwa better with three centre halves in the team and the extra numbers in midfield may have retained the ball better and pushed Wycombe back. But its an experiment to switch to that in an away game and could go badly wrong. I feel we may have quite a different starting line up anyway and some of the younger players given a chance through form or because of injuries. That might be enough change to handle already. I have clocked up a lot of "may" above showing none of us know what the best team or formation is?

Feed the Pope and he will score.Obviously Wycombe did their homework and packed midfield to ensure no crosses were allowed to reach Pope. His goal against WBA showed what he can do if given the service. So Brown must play a system to get crosses in to the box.

Spot on.

I like Popey as he works his socks off and holds the ball up well but sat i thought all the players were one paced and dire and not particularly committed .

Also Smith looks lost and his distribution was awful .

Booting the ball long for Pope is never going work as for Pyke well is level is v Newcastle Town by the looks of it he offered less than nothing .

What can he do along with Montano and Harness for forwards thinking players i thought they were beyond awful .

Thats gone now i dont expect c a performance like that again .

No leader no character until Turner Reeves and Whitfield entered the fray the players they replaced would u play them again im not sure i would if they cannot get themselves up for the first home game well that tells me all i need to know about them and there credentials .

Utv Pope has done it so lets not slag off one of our own .

If he plays hope he gets chances to score well Brown his strength is not flicking balls on its getting it to his feet originally then him playing it wide for someone to deliver a telling ball what he as proved time and time again .

Watch the goals from promotion season Brown Kelly and Morgan and if u reading this defenders try passing to his feet or chest not his head .

Exactly. We need to play to our strengths. Our strength is the Pope and he will score and contribute loads in games if we play it into his feet.
