What is Smith worth?

I'm interested to get peoples opinions on what Smith is worth.

With over a billion pounds being spent in this transfer window, we are seeing a lot of the extra premier league money trickle down into the lower leagues. The best example I have is Leeds paying £3m for Keemar Roof from League two Oxford earlier in the window.

Now he scored 26 goals in 49 matches in all competitions during the 2015-16 campaign... but prior to that he bounced around a few 9 game loan spells scoring 1 or 2 goals in each. Leeds have since released an article saying that he is struggling in the championship.

So given that Keemar went for £3m (with a premium on attackers I would suggest)... what do we think we should be asking for Smith?

At the moment, that's not a question for us, it's a question for a transfer tribunal. If he moves and is out of contract, the tribunal will set the fee. However, we have been hard done by before at these events (£45,000 for Dave Hibbert who had been with us for ten years as a youth teamer!).

That is why I keep banging on and on about getting him on a new contract ASAP. With a new contract you can do what Oxford did with Roofe and *only* sell him for a significant fee.

Without a contract, he can move wherever he wants and we are at the whim of a tribunal as to how much we are paid...

Didn't Walsall just sell a defender for 1.5m? Why shouldn't we be able command figures like that.

Because Rico Henry was one year into a three-year contract. Walsall had recognised his potential and signed him up on a new deal. They could name their price and Brentford paid up £1.5m to tempt Walsall into selling.

This is precisely what myself and others are trying to point out. Get Smith on a contract and we could command a fee like that.

But let his current contract expire and we could receive only what the tribunal decides - what do Vale want - a £50,000 tribunal fee or £1.5m?
