Sutton Utd (H) EFL Cup match thread Sep 26th

Interesting that the murmurs from the crowd were clearly enough that both the manager and captain had to mention it and our style of play in their post match interviews.

Personally I can see they have a plan and are creating chances… I wouldn’t want them to abandon all the work they have done in training to change to a tactic that hasn’t been worked on and doesn’t suit our players.

I suspect that the grievance falls into 2 camps.

1. Those that appreciate we have evolved but want us to be that bit more clinical around the box… hopefully that will come the more we use this brand new way of playing.

2. Those that don’t like the new style and just want to lump it in the box to Popey… as AC said, anyone that thinks that lumping it into the box against Sutton needs to give their head a wobble.

It must be so frustrating as a management team to sit in the 4th round and in the playoffs and have people groan.

If it’s like this when we are doing well, god help us when / if we hit a sticky patch.

A largely frustrating night but we stuck to our principals and are through .

I thought Sutton were a really good team (forget league positions come end of season in league 2 they be top end or  defo between 6th and 10th finishing that is .

You can see why they dumped two league one teams out .

575 passes Vale .

2 goals both beauties in there execution .

Man of  the match Rhys Walters set up the first goal and generally I thought for someone so young was very good .

Here's a few marks .

Ripley 7 important save first half at the angle .

Cass 6 wasn't his usual galloping self but didn't do anything bad but you could equally say didn't pass it as as well as he can.

Balmer 6 at fault for there goal but overall stuck at it still relatively new to the team he will learn and grow other than the error/goal  did little wrong .

Jones 6 very Rusty will be though as first game back since been ill in hospital he did OK.

Some of his passing he will need a few games get back up to speed.

Sang 6

Grant 6

Lowe 6

R Walters 8

Devine 7 never stopped looking for the ball all night ,I think he is a very good player .

Thomas 7 energy enthusiasm a lovely taken goal I'd like see as a experiment with Wilson and Chizzy behind him I think Vale could well destroy teams on what im.seeing if the combination of the 3 is tried at some point .

Massey 7 worked hard for the team all night

Subs

Wilson has banged one over .

Chizzys been busy and Robust a excellent footballer he is a class act

Ojo banged in a great goal after super positive play down the left in the build up by Devine and Plant I think it was good anyway .

Plant folk can say  what they want gives  us  life energy and hard running it creates space ask Ojo ,sure he was involved in creating them extra yards for the pass to be hit and hit it he did like a rocket great goal .

Debrah seemed a very competent young man also

Well done Vale round 4 .

Absolutely delighted .

Bring on Mansfield or Exeter or Ipswich at home if been realistic, but you bever know could be Aston Villa away or Everton or Man Utd or City or Liverpool Arsenal or Chelsea/Brighton

Word on the support tonight .

A lot better second half first half like a morgue mind you the play was a tad poor.

Has VFIA, Breadwinner etc etc morphed again?

He was better than Jones tonight.  His 1st game back admittedly but not his best game.

i'm not convinced by any of them. Jones always has a error in him with his passing. His long passing is great but it's the simple ones he struggles with. I'd have debrah smith & yak as the back 3 but i suppose it's swing & roundabouts as all our defenders have a mistake in them barring smith who rarely has a bad game. Jesse looks a good player from his little cameo last night so like to see him given a run of games if he's fit enough

I think my favourite moment tonight was Massey striding forward really aggressively in second half injury time towards the right corner. His body language rapidly visibly changed. First time all game I can remember him doing that. He then calmly and methodically passed it straight ahead of him straight out of touch.

Lol. I remember the exact moment. Made me laugh at the time and kind of sums up Massey. Big heart, Small brain.

To be fair to Massey he was trying get a flick off the defender for a corner.

Vale have a bigger away allocation than those 3 clubs. All at or less than just 3000 in normal circumstances. Hopefully in cup circumstances more could be provided.

They do. Man U give the whole 2nd tier for big cup followings, around 9k to some teams. Arsenal the same. Liverpool tend to give the whole bottom tier of the Anfield Road end, that might not happen this year while it's being redeveloped though.

Doubt if there is anyone alive who has seen us play Chelsea. The last time was in 1929 a home win in Hanley. We have never played them in the Cup, only the Youth Cup.  Just 14 league games

Really pleased to get through

Was really worried we would make too many changes and we did!

However we deserved the win in the end job done well done to the gaffer and staff for putting faith in this team when others such as myself felt we could come unstuck

Good win, hard fought but a positive is we got through and rested pretty much our entire first XI for Bolton.

Balmer did well first half but was poor second, Rhys Walters looks a quality prospect and wouldn't be too worried if he had to start in L1 for us.

Devine was decent last night, we had to dig deep but once the big guns came on it was always going to be us to win it if anyone in normal time and a great finish.

We have to be patient as fans though, we are trying to build a style and identity and its coming along, results are there, its similar to how England play with the build up and the more we do it the more fluent it should become even if it can frustrate when we go back from a good position. the football we play is excellent.

After passing the ball over 300 times first half we achieved 1 shot on target. We posed pretty much no threat at all to Sutton and from an entertainment perspective were as boring as watching paint dry.

This idea we are being clever by retaining possession but doing no attacking with it is fundamentally wrong.

Yes I wish we had lost but given it a real go by creating hundreds of chances and being entertained.

Same on Saturday I would rather lose to Bolton but play expansive entertaining football !! 🙄😎🙈

Remind me how many halves are in a game. Second half they were tired, we kept passing, created chances ,scored goals and won, thank you very much.

Pretty sure the 4th round is played w/c 30th October, which is half term week so could help with the attendance not being a school night. Really hope we get a great away day now.

i'd take any big team away but love it at Vale park myself get the place packed out & give them a game 💪🏻

we did, do & have been attacking with it all season it's just about being patient. This group are trying to find the right time to play a pass etc yes it can be frustrating at times & i'd like us to have a pop at goal a bit more but you can't say it's not working so far. And it's something that will take time when it gels it will be unreal
