The Pitch

I got the feeling in DC's last home interview he is getting frustrated at the state of our legendary pitch
How much would it realistically cost to get it sorted out once and for all?
It's definitely been a factor in some of our performances and can be a big hinderence for us

Around 500,000 has been said on here regularly. Raco said the same when Norman was in charge, and that was from the horse's mouth. No doubt it's gone up since then

I've never seen an official announcement of the unveiling of Speedys replacement?

The pitch is abysmal sadly. The Bycars 6 yard box v Morecambe was a sand and sludge heap.

Well Wednesday Pompey and Ipswich all managed to win on it .

Unfortunately we've just got to get on with it. It's certainly a pudding though but the same for both teams.

Just ask Blackpool Spurs or even Stoke teams if it is Leveller Matthews could not get his feet out of the mud in 1954. Regis could not kick the ball through a puddle although Foyle floated over the ground for the third vale goal. And low and behold Spurs even refused to play Ardiles because the mud came over Venables new shoes and ruined them.

Double it and then some.

Don’t think it will be double, more like 700-800k now. Trouble is, it makes the matches less attractive to watch if the football is scrappy which inevitably reduces crowds. Also, more likely to have games called off which must disrupt preparations and cost the club money.

Sat on the Lorne Street side on Boxing Day and it was very noticeable how heavy and cut-up the pitch was. There would have been semi-pro sides playing on better surfaces. The ball was barely bouncing.

The price of having an old stadium is some fairly painful yet unavoidable expenses in the next few years - the Railway and the pitch being the big two, before we even turn to the Lorne Street.

It's going to cost millions to get there and I think we may have to get used to punching above our weight in terms of playing budget whilst Carol undoes 30+ years of neglect by her predecessors.

It would be really helpful to smaller clubs and to the progress of future football players if they could all have decent pitches to play on paid for by the EFL and the ridiculous amounts of SKY cash given to the pampered and disloyal players higher up the pyramid system . There is no thoughts about helping lower league infrastructure . Lower league very often have matches postponed while it snows or rains but the big boys do not . There must be a mechanism to agree to finance each club on a fair level . It may be argued that it is unfair to penalise clubs that have invested in very good pitches but they would have had the money to spend anyway . No money should be spent on stands etc by outside cash but just the basics which is the pitch . They should then work their way down the football pyramid to non-league . The bigger clubs often come trawling for better players and it would be a great  benefit to their targets to play on better surfaces . It probably will not happen because of the greed of top clubs but it would improve football --nice to dream ! .

We need a new pitch and it would offer innumerable benefits, not least as someone rightfully pointed out, better football to watch.

Fairly obvious that sand job of filling the pitch that was condemned at the time, has been a failure. So I’d like to think we will get one in the summer because if not then…when?

Fairly sure that at a SC meeting we were advised £1.25m. The Railway I think has a safety licence for about 18 more months. It'll all be on the owner's list.

Really? Sounds a bit serious. Good job we are in a successful period. Those figures would be crippling if we were bottom of league 2.

Depends on the extent of the job, lead time of the contract etc. Recovering the clay and replacing with sand is a massive job even with a lot of JCBs
