Stockport fan here!

Our first game in the Football League Trophy for nearly 12 years has thrown up a repeat of the 1993 final, which has quite a nice ring to it, even if it brings back painful memories for us! Ahead of our first trip to Vale Park in over a decade, I’ve had a chat with Rob Fielding from the One Vale Fan website.

That link just takes me to the to of this page.

Be a low crowd don't even think 1000 will attend unless Stockport sell loads, could be more of them than vale fans. Change the whole 11 for me and rest the ones we want playing against the more important game against Cheltenham on Saturday. Wouldn't be surprised if Stockport played full strength and we played reserves and youths and lost 3 or 4 nil.

Southampton say he can play left wingback or left wing. Massey really used to play right wing but basically played as a right wingback for 3 years. It will be a lot easier for Small to play on the left of a front 2 than playing as a left footed right wingback.

Southampton will recall him if we keep playing him out of position. He’s a left wing back, play him there or don’t play him. He’s never a striker, we saw that Saturday.

Imagine giving that amazing presentation to a Premier League club, convincing them to loan out a future England star (as one poster on this site predicted), only to then use him as an emergency striker because of poor squad management.

I think Small can play as a wide attacking player. He is strong, has good pace and dribbles well. I accept it was an experiment against Portsmouth and we didn't score from it. But it wasn't completely implausible.

Also a chance to play against Southampton`s nearest rivals?🙂

Southampton will definitely recall him if he isn't playing games at all. If Benning continues to hold his place and Hussey gets played in preference to him when Benning is injured or substituted Small won't be here come January. Last season for their under 21s he played as a left winger, left centrehalf and left wingback.

Massey hasn't played as a striker very much at all in his career since leaving Watford. He played as a winger at Colchester and Orient. At Wigan he started on the wing then converted to wingback. Crucially he is right footed, which Small isn't. Small will be as out of water on the right as playing further forward. Massey is referred in a lot of wiki linked articles as a striker but if you look at where he's played he's been used as an attacking winger, which is why he has never scored a lot of goals (about one goal every 9 games).

IF the manager wants to give a run-out to Massey and Hussey then he has to fit Small in somewhere. If he wants to play Small at left wingback then Hussey won't play. Whatever is decided Small HAS to play in the JPT. If he doesn't he could have stayed with his parent club and started all their JPT games. In the ideal world we'd have another striker in the squad. With Harrison being so vital at the moment it would be madness to risk him.
