Thanks for at least trying to get what I'm on about without picking and choosing points, maybe Budgie could learn a thing or two.

I get what everyone's point is, no one wants a situation where we are carrying Guthrie and Robinson. We will, hopefully, pull in some targets in the next day/week/fortnight.

Trust me I get it.... I got it 2000 posts ago.
We need more than 2 strikers. Nobody is disagreeing.

I wanted them in before Spain, I wanted them in before Fleetwood, I want them in before Saturday.

But Im trying to be patient, because I believe the club are doing everything they can to get better quality players in and to do that takes time.

I'll be honest, I grow more anxious as time goes on. But I still believe we'll be stronger at the end of the window than we were at the start.

I trust the current management team.

Now how many keepers do we currently have?

I don’t see the management filling the gap with any old piece of tripe, we are too professional for that. I still see a young Premiership / Championship player maybe filling the gap. A proven striker will not want to sit on the bench watching Willo & Proc every week. Any young striker will not get released until the prem pre-season is complete.

Surely proctor won’t be our starting league 1 forward? We need a starting striker and then a player on loan in my opinion, at least. You have to remember the fitness issues of Wilson and proctor as well.

I trust them too, but there's still room for debate surely? Otherwise let's close down the thread and reopen it in 3 weeks.

Whist I would certainly have released Robinson I actually think his status as King of the numpties is a little undeserved. He did put a shift in towards the end of the season before last  and in some small way helped to keep us up. It's perhaps because he is the most recent example of a relative failure but there has been worse.
All this chat about just two strikers and one keeper is farcical. It's as if we can only stay buoyant for two or three days after a win and then the doubts start to creep in, doubts of mistrust, failure and deceit. Some people perhaps view Vale akin to an abusive partner who promises to change but somehow always reverts to type. I think we do have to give the new changed Vale a chance, when they say they won't let us down, we have to believe they won't let us down. I understand that when you have been subjected to the torrid talent of Big Reggie, Laurie Wilson et al you can form a negative mindset. I can honesty say that Vale have been really good to me for at least eighteen months, they haven't lied, cheated or broken any promises, I know it's early days but I really do think they've changed. Most importantly I believe they now love me, which was a real struggle to embrace due to my low self esteem.
Great post Dr.

You should be a psychologist (if you aren't already)

Stung is struggling to find a reason why Robinson isn't king of the numpties, I'd sooner wait until January if it saves us getting in anyone so bone idle as that wages thief .

Come on Stung, there was at least three games when he really tried his hardest, I think.

we are struggling to get players in because the recruitment team massively under estimated the current average wage in League 1 , they can sugar coat it however they want , but its a massive step up and unless you pay the market going rate you will not get the better players ( as ever just my humble opinion ) we have all gone quiet because we won last week , but lets be honest we beat Fleetwood , we are going to face a lot and i mean a lot better teams

One issue is we need to bring is strikers we can afford who are better than Garrity playing up front, who I thought did ok last season. If we can't we might as well play Garrity up front when Conlon is fit. The bigger clubs currently in Div 1 will have pushed up the asking price for good strikers at this level. Fleetwood have 7 on their books; we saw 4 of them on Saturday. None of them looked any better than Garrity when we played him last season. We are where we are with it, although it is frustrating.  Maybe we should have gone for Edmondson,  although he's probably league 2 at the moment.

Its also worth remembering last season we got through to January with Wilson, Proctor & Lloyd as our only recognised strikers. We also had Amoo, Garrity and Rodney who could do a job there. Both Proctor and Wilson got injured in that period and we went up. This season we have Wilson and Proctor with Garrity, Massey, McDermott and Holden who could cover.

Ipswich and Pompey have bigger budgets but they also have to wait until clubs decide who to loan out.

If we had lost on Saturday everyone would have been having a complete meltdown on here regarding the lack of signings. I have said it before and I will say it again, unless you pay the going rate then you will struggle to get the quality players in that you need. We got away with one on Saturday but  much stuff tests are around the corner. I was not convinced about Covolon but to let him go out on loan with no obvious replacement lined up and have no keeper on the bench on the opening game of the season was nothing short of ridiculous.
At present we are relying on Proctor staying fit whilst Wilson is out injured and are hoping that a 17 year old Academy Striker can fill the void. Not forgetting if anything happens to Stone then we are knackered. Signings need to be made and quick.

Last season around this time most fans were expecting an experienced goal scoring striker to be signed, we signed George Lloyd. I remember being a little underwhelmed by his signing although he turned out to be a decent enough player when he did play but he was hardly a goal scorer.   We need much better this season.

Every man and his duck can see where we need strengthening, the point is that if it boiled down to taking a player purely to fill a gap in the squad or waiting until a genuine target becomes available, I believe we’d take the latter course and wait, rather than waste money on someone who’ll never play.  I don’t think it’ll come to that, certainly with regards to forwards.

I agree it shouldn't have to come to that. Let's see what tomorrow brings

Literally tomorrow?  I hope you’re right, but without wishing to sound like a stuck record, we’ve already established that we have until the end of August to sign players.

If we are honest as fans , DC and DF have fooked up regarding strikers and a goalkeeper ( for what ever reason ) , there is no way no matter what crap is spun out in the media that they would want to be a week into the new season without these positions  sorted .

How have they fooked up?  You can’t force a player to sign.  If we’re targeting the same players as other clubs and they sign elsewhere what do you suggest?  We sign someone for the sake of it?  If a player fails at the interview stage what should we do?  Sign him anyway?

They haven’t spun any crap as far as I can see.  Both DF and DC have stated the facts, we’re behind where we wanted to be in terms of recruitment.

They would if the alternative is signing short-term crap! The waiting game is to get players in who will improve the squad not just plug gaps. If we don't find anyone permanent between now and January I think we will get a couple of youngsters in, from Championship or, even, Prem - there's plenty of them around as most top clubs have too many signed up, needing to get minutes to develop. I'd be happy if we waited until January...or even next Summer...to get targets in. This season is more about consolidation than a genuine push for another promotion...unless...
