Match Thread: Swindon Town v Port Vale

Tough game at the leaders,  not a happy hunting ground, but a welcome return to our previous standards against the 0s, and with no mid-week game,  should give us some hope. It is the start of a run of games against the stronger teams which could define our season. Assuming Montano has recovered, retain the same team and formation, thus giving Cullen a run, and let him seize his chance. Also  continuity will make the formation more effective and the passing slicker, I assume we will have no major signings. Since Doyle their main striker has returned to the Bantams, a possible 2-2 score line or even sneak it?

Some of the teams with their games in hand play them on Tuesday:

5th placed Bradford vs 8th placed Colchester

6th placed Northampton vs 20th placed Orient

A draw between Bradford and Colchester would be great.

I can't figure out when Cheltenham's game is due to be.

The next 9 games are horrendous; 1st placed Swindon, 2nd Exeter, 13th placed Salford who have signed Elliot, Andrade, and O'Connor, 6th placed Northampton, 9th placed Forest Green, 8th placed Colchester, a rapidly improving 12th placed Walsall, 14th placed Scunthorpe who battered us at Glanford Park and were on the up before a recent dip in form, and 7th placed Cheltenham.

The only teamw currently not in the top half we play in the next 9 is Scunthorpe, and I'd put them money on them being top half by the end of the season, and Salford, who have signed three League 1 calibre footballers in the last week.

Our form against good sides needs to continue; from the 9 games, you're needing 15+ points (4 wins, 3 draws, 2 defeats) to still be top 10 come the end of it, in my completely arbitrary view.

Tough game and being so soon after beating them they will know what to expect from us in letting Zakuani play it out and high press the rest.

Do we go back to Pope as we are away and he was excellent against them at VP? Or stick with Cullen who played well yesterday?

Is Monty fit? Few decisions to make and maybe a new face or two could add to the choices.

If we can get 2-3 points from Swindon and Exeter that would be a decent return and keep us in touch. If we get more than 3 then i would start believing we could pull off the top 7!

Got a feeling we might get something here, no idea why but just a gut feeling. Had it before we beat them in December.

Crewe are playing Macc on Tuesday so will be interesting to see how they cope with the rough and tumble against a team struggling to stay in the league.

Not really, different team to us that tells us nothing in an isolated game. So far the season tells us that Crewe are better than us, but we've already beaten them. Does that logic make us better because of one game, or does the fact that they are third in the table give a truer reflection?   Likewise, are we better than Swindon,  but worse than Morecambe?

Vale are in a steady progress transitional period,  that will see erratic performances, with steady and gradual improvements on and off the field, despite the guaranteed setbacks. So most sensible folk take the view that we're not league champions if we win a game and we're not heading towards non league if we lose a game, though this time last year,  it was a distinct possibility.

We are talking about football fans I am sure this morning a Stoke fan is thinking of the play offs. But I agree steady and stable progress is the best way.

See their manager is already coming up with excuses.  My players are running on empty due to the amount of games they have played.

Claiming a lot of injuries as well, cue wonder debut of youth or new loan player. Clubs respecting the Vale, whatever next.

Jerry Yates has now been recalled by Rotherham... he was their second top scorer behind Doyle (and the Leagues second top scorer) so they've lost much of their goal threat (Nearly 35 goals gone from the first half of the season).

Could be the right time to play them, think they've Anderson out injured too.

The same number of goals that our entire team have scored!

Are they in the Europa League or something?

Just their manager getting worried that Vale will win by the looks of it and getting the excuses in already, so he can say - told you so.  Same for every team after the xmas period.

Be nice to win this game.
