Match Thread - Port Vale v Forest Green Rovers

If we played with this passion from the start of the season then we would be top 4

No we wouldn't.

If you take our last 9 games since Askey took over, we'd be on 9 points and in 19th place.

Even if you take today as the 5th game in our improved run, we'd be on 8 points and in 6th place.

Fantasy land.

My take on the game ,first half we had a spell where we played very well and there goalie made a couple of fine stops .

Second half was ok until forest green made 2 subs then we lost our way and gave a very soft goal away .

I do not think Forest Green deserved to win but they did so fair play to them.

Vale should have been at least worthy of a draw but not to be .

Ok so we are back down to Earth this evening but we've had a good run and look fairly safe.

2 things stood out for me today;

Askey doesn't know how to change things and leaves it late to make subs. I'm sure 75% of Vale fans there today could see their substitutions had swung the game in their favour and it was only a matter of time before they scored.

Once again, like Mansfield, FGR made their subs and took advantage of our weakness at left back. Crookes had his third poor game in a row. His passing today was woeful and he was often caught out of position. The initial mistake for their first goal was Crookes giving the ball away very cheaply.

Still think we will be safe by the time we play Stevenage.

Loathe to be too critical but agree Tommy.

Crookes is like a rabbit in headlights when he gets near the opposition box and 9/10 takes the easy option and gives it to someone else instead of putting in a cross.

Just wasn't to be today, however if I were a County fan playing 70 mins against 10 men and losing to an injury time goal I'd be saying it's curtains.

Another game gone and whilst not a great day we have in effect just lost a single point to Macc.

Finally the Lorne street lino was equally if not more culpable than the ref.

Some incredible decisions with the wiping out of Clark right in front of his nose possibly the worst decision.

Hard to see what went on as I'm in the Paddock but the linesman seemed to get at least two simple, blatant offsides wrong in the first half.

But don't let's blame the officials for our loss. We were ok in the first half but poor I thought after the break when they made two crucial subs and stopped us from playing out from the back. Miller is hopeless at keeping possession and had a very poor game, though it's hard when you are faced with big strapping defenders and the ball gets fired at you. Nonetheless he was poor and should have been subbed. Conlon too ran out of puff and they started to dominate midfield. You could see the goal coming and we can have no complaints. A game lasts for 90 minutes and they were more professional and better drilled than us after half time. No complaints.

We need a fit Tom Pope back. Miller was hopeless today and looked lost after half time.

Joyce was excellent and well deserved his MOTM award.

But that old failing in the final third came back to haunt us and once we conceded a soft goal we were never going to claw it back as they tightened up at the back and saw out the game with ease.

It was just one of them days. FGR are one of the better sides in the league and yet for most of the game we were more than a match for them. But it's simple, if you play a high pressing game then you will run out of steam sooner or later. Liverpool played this way under Klopp up until this season, and if they weren't two or three up after 60 minutes previously they often found themselves in trouble and dropped points. Askey should have made his subs much sooner than he did, and had he done so we might have gotten something out of this game.

I still say put a decent forward in our side alongside a fully fit Tom Pop and we finish top half comfortably.

It was a game of two halves, a game of their two subs, well one really, who, for whatever reason, massively changed the game in favour of the Vegans, but more importantly a game of two chairmen. Dale Vince maybe a knobber but I would gladly eat grass for life and convert my house into a windmill if it meant swapping him for our pie munching clown.

Expect Macc to stay up, what are Yeovil odds?

1/1

We are actually as much as 20/1 with some bookies tonight. Notts need three wins in 7 to get us and today could mentally kill them losing that in those circumstances like Chesterfield when we beat them with ten men.

Probably only one spot to worry about now.
