Player contracts

Still going to be fighting the sabotage of browns catastrophic appointment.

The catastrophic appointment to beat all catastrophic appointments was Bruno Ribeiro, who in their right mind would sign a dozen players from overseas who were not good enough for the conference never mind Lge 1, most of whom he'd probably never seen play.

I'd take some of them any day over the current crop. 49 league 1 points is some achievement for players not good enough for the conference.

I’m not going to debate who was worse. It’s like asking which eye I’d like gauged out, my left or my right.

After four consecutive disastrous transfer windows the mess will take time to sort. Aspo wasn't backed as promised this January so effectively he's only just starting this summer and he'll be stuck with some players he doesn't want but who are still under contract or who can activate extension clauses agreed by Brown & goodness knows who.

The bottom line is we're desperate for some quality in the squad but will Abnorm provide an appropriate budget?

Bit of a non argument really. He's 35 years old so of course there won't be a queue out of the door to sign him. But someone will take a chance on him to play a part in games and to also provide some experience and direction in a dressing room too.

And according to the Sentinel, that someone is going to be us. As he has a clause similar to Danny Pugh which he, according to them, has chosen to activate.

And knowing Aspin from this season, he won't just 'play a part in games' but be the first on the team sheet, week in week out.

I'd be surprised if a league side went for him. Non league I could get for another season but not league football.

He's been in the team so much this season because the alternatives are Middleton, young kids like Calveley who aren't ready yet, and Pugh. There are no other options besides Hannant, who has had to do a job on the left so that Monty could go to left back.

It's unfair to accuse Aspin when his hands are tied. We'll see a few more Hannant-like midfielders next year and him and Pugh may not get much game time at all.

The most annoying thing about Pugh and Tongue is that Aspin wants to trim his squad down and they're stopping this. They'll probaby be on a fair wage too.

My bet he won't be as regular next season. Signing Regis said he was looking for someone else to slot in there. I suspect in the ideal world Hannat was going to play there post Christmas with Whitfield on the left, but Whitfield had a poor January. Ideally we would only have two of Kay, Tongue and Pugh as one anchoring centre midfield and one providing cover wouldn't be a problem.

A midfield three of Kay, Hannat and Worral looks pretty balanced. Gibbons, Smith and Montano is a solid enough basis for the defence. Pope up front. So the key areas which must be filled are left and right midfield and a tall commanding centre half. Priority obviously a keeper, as a decent keeper would be worth 10 points on our current tally, not just in terms of soft goals conceded but also confidence for players in front of them. Any other upgrades of starting positions would be a positive.

I don't think we are that far off being a top 10 team as teams haven't been playing us off the park, apart from maybe 3 or 4 games. We need to keep a core together. Part of the problem over the last 2 years has been the constant churn of players. I'm sure part of the January problem was trying to bed in yet another back 4.

The strange thing over the last few months is Howe not getting a run out as we paid money for him. You'd think Aspin has a plan to use him somewhere next season.
