A fan managed to get a question, on behalf of the BBC, asking whether the hierarchy would comment on former managing director Hamilton Smith's claims that he warned people at the club about Bennell, and was met with "a few groans among the audience".

 

This is a truly incredible and disgusting display of burying-head-in-sandism. I can sort of understand the club not wanting to make any direct comments in the midst of an investigation, but for the fans to kick off about someone asking the question, and to ban journalists from attending the session, is morally reprehensible and really makes me question what sort of culture has been formed at Crewe.

If he was sacked by Crewe in January 1992 and then emigrated, he can’t have stayed in the USA for very long, based on what FST said earlier in the thread.
He was only there for a short spell. I started at Stoke in December 92 and Bennell took us to Dominoes in Jan 93. I stayed there for 6 months, and was back at Trubshaw in Aug 93 as it didn't work out. It was summer 94 at a tournament in the US with Dominoes that he was arrested.

This just gets more bizarre by the day with this latest allegation regarding his PC. It’s weird that the first accusation was made a few days ago about him letting a young boy watch porn, but then to see that this latest accusation was actually made 7 years ago, something doesn’t sit right. It’s not as though the former player made an allegation about a porn film and then this one came out right after, it looks like there is evidence that it’s from 2011.. also, I’m confused as to why this person made a complaint to the NSPCC, a children’s charity, regarding his concerns about the material on the PC. Crewe fans defending him can say all they like, but these are very serious accusations and Dario could find himself in a lot of trouble.

 

If Dario is innocent of any wrongdoing (other than knowing about Bennell and not saying anything) then it would be a shame to see a man who has given his whole adult life to Crewe Alex have his reputation tarnished. If he is guilty, though, then he should be punished accordingly and if that is the case then Crewe are in massive trouble.

Horrendous accounts in the national press and media on a daily basis. Why no comments from the Sentinel and Radio Stokes Mcgarry and Morse just seem to sweep it under the carpets. I hope for the sake of all the boys abused that Bowler, Gradi and Crewe Alex get there come uppance.

 

I would also point a finger at the local media. They should have the local community at the heart of their reporting and they should NOT be avoiding raising the issue - there really is no excuse for it not being covered by them. How can a story about Dario Gradi and Crewe be lead on the BBC/Guardian Sport section and NOT covered at all by the local paper?

 

I do differ a bit with your last sentence. I wouldn't hope that "Crewe Alex" per se are punished. The innocent fans, officials, players, coaches etc don't deserve any punishment.

 

For me only those either directly involved in any abuse, those who stood aside and let it happen, those who (for whatever reason) haven't or are not helping the authorities should get their come uppence... but that's not everyone associated with Crewe though.
