Nice place, but far too expensive compared to 50 similar areas in Europe which are far more spectacular and apart from the Swiss ones which are also a bit expensive, also far cheaper.

Nice as Windermere is, and Kendal and Ullswater and all the places there, they don't compare well to Alpine resorts, many places in North Italy (Lake como , Lake Maggiore), the Czech republic, Scandanavia, and even Spanish mountain resorts.

Each to his own though.

Windermere is the Blackpool of the Lake District, places like Rydal water and Tarn Hows are much nicer, also Grasmere.

Yes, they are nice - and by Windermere being like Blackpool I guess you mean Bowness, which is vile and over commercialised. Don't really compare to icy alpine lakes surrounded by jagged 10,000 foot peaks and magnificent Bavarian castles though.

 

Bowness just needs a bingo hall and trashy travel agent with someone serving who is in a bad mood from too many wine gums and thinks they can provoke a 'banning' outburst.

A good thing I guess but I've never been particularly enamoured with the Lake District.

 

Some years back Jeremy Clarkson commented on it and made comparison with other similar locations in in Italy and so on...he was right that the lakes simply don't compare on so many levels

 

But if it helps conservation and preservation and so on then fairynuff

Dump doesn't begin to describe the site...everything's falling apart. You'd think they'd get some work done on them if they are expecting people to come and see them. Ditto Stonehenge where a lot of it has fallen into disrepair too.
