I haven't checked my facts here so bare with me but when was the last time we ever signed a 'proven' goalscorer that continued to score goals for us?

 

Constantine, Richards, McPhee, Brooker, Sodje, Pope.... none of which that I can remember were prolific before becoming good goalscorers for us?

 

I guess Lee Hughes would be one, although he struggled somewhat in L1. But in L2 it was 10 goals in 18 games.

Yeah I'll give you that one. All that sticks in my head is that people are asking us to sign a proven goalscorer but it really isn't that simple. It's got to be someone that fits into the system and for us in the past our goalscorers haven't usually been ones that have come in proven.

I really don't think we need to keep signing strikers.

 

We need to create better chances for the current strikers first.

I think the reason why the word experienced is mentioned is telling. We've a lot of inexperience in the team and perhaps need a bit more nous and know how at this level.

 

I entirely agree that we need a goalscoring wide man who can also assist the strikers as well as a midfielder who gets in the opposition penalty box. We've only got Foley and he isn't prolific.

 

Oh for a Marshall and a Dodds in the squad, but that's another story...

 

I'd go for one of those type of players before yet another central striker but days before the big kick-off our options are limited.

Lets be honest proven goal scorers cost money we dont have. Tyson was a proven goal scorer, Pope was, Reid was but these folks arent ripping up trees so i think are a waste of money, we should be looking at 15-25k bargains in the conference etc.. who have been steady for two seasons and need a step up to show their talent. What concerns me is that we dont seem to be doing homework on these players and scouting them/ trialing the, instead we are taking advice from an agency on whats on their books. Lets be honest if an agency says they have 20 players all with experience of academy/ league football in other countries then great but some of whats arrived doesnt seem to fit that mold. A couple do for sure and you can see why they are here, however in terms of spine of the team no one jumps off the page and looks an automatic choice to start. I personally see us being draw specialists this year like Utd last year, keep the ball well, get bullied in a few games against teams who battle but have no cutting edge and likely to average a goal a game.

I think we have the goalscorer we need in the squad. JJ Hooper showed enough for me in the last 2 months of the season to think he has what it takes to score goals regularly at this level. It's a risk but one I think we'll be taking.

 

Unless we're going to spend thousands a week on someone to come in, we're not going to get what we're after. I think we need to see where we are after the bank holiday weekend. We've signed 14 players. Let's see how they do first before we start deciding if we need anyone new.

Agree with Mattholl. The key word with Pope and Tyson is 'was' a proven goal scorer. Obviously Pope is an ex-player and a Vale fan so we're going to get the rumours(although for me we shouldn't go there despite his fantastic efforts for the club previously) but I'm not sure I quite get the clamour for Tyson if I'm honest. Experienced yes but his record has tailed off since his Forest days and at 33 if he really going to get much better, I'd argue he's getting worse! I'd agree if he was in the Lee Hughes mold of 'I've scored goals everywhere I've played' and even though I'm now mid 30s and have lost a bit of pace can still find the onion bag but Hughes is/was a natural born goalscorer. Nathan Tyson is far from that!

 

I agree with need a player but wouldn't be wasting money on just anyone!

Hooper, Saleiro, Cicilia, Forrester might turn out to be our "goalscorer". Past records mean little as a striker.

I'd like to see Cicilia started up front with Hooper or Forrester first. Cicilia hasn't really done much apart from hold the odd ball up & show some good footwork.

 

I reckon we've got to give these forwards a chance before throwing big money at anyone (which is very unlikely anyway).

Hooper and Forrester look lively enough, I am not expecting much from Cicilia or Saleiro until they have played about 20 games against league 1 opposition.

6 league goals in 21 starts (and a further 15 sub appearances)

 

surely we know from experience that pope needs to be the main man at a club in order to get the best out of him - something he never got the chance to be at bury

 

i'm not saying he's the answer to our problems, just think he gets judged unfairly

Its not so much the fans asking to sign a proven goalscorer, my point is that the chairman should not be spouting off on twitter that we need a proven goalscorer, 5 days before kick off, having sanctioned 14 signings already!

This happened 12 months ago. Does he ever learn!
