Blatter resigns

There needs to be a complete clean sweep of those in authoritative positions, with a view to getting people who have the interest of football at heart - unlikely to happen as it will be one of the cronies, but we can hope. I certainly don't want Platini anywhere near this role.

It had to happen, he couldn't go on, not even the thickest of skins Septic Blatter. Time for a clean sweep, an end to a country like Lichtenstein having the same number of votes as Germany for example.

Whomever takes over has to be as clean as clean can be, no nepotism, no political correctness, the best man for the job.

I expect the reasons for his resignation will emerge. Speculating, this could have been his plan all along. The appointment process now will be overseen by him over a few months whilst he is in charge. I am not sure I can see the advantage in that from his perspective or his personal motivation and so we turn to other reasons. One could be health, he is old, he has appreciated the pressure he will be under and decided he can't cope now he has seen the weight of people against him and the likelihood of drawn out investigation and regulatory enforcement. Another could be that he is fleeing to privacy. If he is questioned by authorities whilst in office he will be subject to public scrutiny in FIFA and the media. If this happens after he leaves office he can be private about it and tell the media in particular to leave him alone.

Absolutely no idea why he's going now but good riddance

For me they should bring someone in from outside football that has no connections with FIFA/UEFA/etc to reform it from top to bottom...someone with a proven track record of reform, foresight, honesty, credibility etc

Ed Balls is available
